The document provides an overview of comets, asteroids, meteors, and related concepts in astronomy. It explains the characteristics of comets and asteroids, the structure of the asteroid belt, and definitions of meteoroids, meteors, and meteorites. Additionally, it discusses the heliocentric model and the elliptical shape of planetary orbits.

Comets, Asteroids and Meteors

GROUP 1
SCIENCE
Unit 2 MODULE 3
COMA

The coma is a cloud of

gases that surrounds
the nucleus of a comet.
In some comets, a
cloud of hydrogen gas
surrounds the coma.
ASTEROIDS

Asteroids are small, rocky objects that orbit the Sun.

Although asteroids orbit the Sun like planets, they are much
smaller than planets. There are lots of asteroids in our solar
system.
ASTEROID BELT

The asteroid belt is a torus-

shaped region in the Solar
System, located roughly
between the orbits of the
planets Jupiter and Mars. It
contains a great many solid,
irregularly shaped bodies, of
many sizes, but much smaller
than planets, called asteroids
or minor planets.
ASTRONOMICAL UNIT

The astronomical unit is a unit of

length, roughly the distance from
Earth to the Sun and
approximately equal to 150
million kilometres or 8.3 light-
minutes. astronomical unit (AU,
or au), a unit of length effectively
equal to the average, or mean,
distance between Earth and the
Sun, defined as 149,597,870.7 km
(92,955,807.3 miles).
COMETS

Comets are cosmic snowballs of

frozen gases, rock, and dust that
orbit the Sun. When frozen, they
are the size of a small town.
When a comet's orbit brings it
close to the Sun, it heats up and
spews dust and gases into a
giant glowing head larger than
most planets.
HELIOCENTRIC MODEL

The word "helios" in Greek

means "sun." Heliocentric
means that the sun is at
the center. A heliocentric
system is one in which the
planets revolve around a
fixed sun. Thus Mercury,
Venus, the Earth, Mars,
Jupiter and Saturn all
revolve around the sun.
METEORITE

A meteoroid is a small rocky or

metallic body in outer space.
Meteoroids are defined as
objects significantly smaller
than asteroids, ranging in size
from grains to objects up to a
meter wide. Objects smaller
than this are classified as
micrometeoroids or space dust.

in the sky caused by a
meteoroid passing through
Earth's atmosphere.
METEORITE

A meteorite is a solid piece of

debris from an object, such as
a comet, asteroid, or
meteoroid, that originates in
outer space and survives its
passage through the
atmosphere to reach the
surface of a planet or moon.
ELLIPSE

We call the shape of the

Earth's orbit, elliptical. This
means it is shaped like an
ellipse. An ellipse is a circle
which has been squashed
or flattened a bit. All 8
planets in our Solar System
travel around the Sun in
elliptical orbits.
