INTRODUCTION
• The Faculty of Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) began in 2013 as a program within the
Three programs of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (Medicine, Nursing, and
MLS programs), which was established in 1990 as part of the University of Kassala, which
is located in the city of Kassala, the capital of Kassala State, Republic of Sudan. The faculty
awards a Bachelor’s degree with honors in one of the specializations of medical laboratory
sciences in four years. So far, four batches of students have graduated from the faculty.
• The University of Kassala’s mission is to improve health in Kassala State and Sudan
through training and qualifying a medical team capable of working in an integrated health
system. The Faculty of Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) plays a pivotal role in the
various healthcare professions. They provide invaluable up to date knowledge for
diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases by evidence-based medicine. The Faculty
of Medical Laboratory Sciences, at Kassala University equips students with essential
knowledge and techniques to develop their future careers in diagnosing diseases and
performing medical research.
Justification
• Due to the emergence of some new diseases such as corona, chikungunya, and
dengue fever, as well as the development in laboratory diagnostic technology and
equipment, the medical laboratory curriculum has been developed so that a graduate
of MLS from Kassala University can serve the Kassala state and Sudan, as well as
confront the foreign labor market
• The Faculty of MLS currently offers a four-year Bachelor’s in five key disciplines
including:
• - Clinical Chemistry
• - Microbiology
• - Haematology and Immunohematology
• - Histopathology and Cytology
• - Parasitology and Medical Entomology

• The Faculty of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Kassala University strives
towards developing the highest standards of educational excellence,
health-related research, and appropriate social responsibility to
produce medical laboratory scientists who are ethical professionals,
Self and lifelong learners, innovative, critical thinkers aware of
diversity and local, regional and global health issues.

EDUCATIONAL STRATEGIES AND
METHODS
• The Faculty of MLS adopts the following methods in the daily
programme of activities:
• Problem -based learning (PBL) or team -based learning (TBL)sessions-
one problem/ week at most.
• Seminars and small group discussions – once/ week at least.
• Field practice in rural and primary health care settings and societies not
less than 1/5th of the timetable.
• Practical sessions (laboratory, clinical,pharmaceutical industries) not
less than 1/4th of the curriculum timetable.
EDUCATIONAL STRATEGIES AND
METHODS
• 5Skill laboratory(weekly) sessions.
• Lectures -not more than 1/3rd of the curriculum timetable (not more
than3 lectures/day).
• Educational assignments, reports, and research activities (as many as
the program would allow- at least one per module).
• Graduation project.
• In-service training
Duration of the course
• Duration of the course: Total Four years(eight semesters) didactic and practical, with
Hospital Inservice training, and graduation research project.
• Total credit hours for BsC (Honor) degree= 171 hrs.

• • The curriculum follows the 'semester system' extending over 4 years: full eight semesters.
• • The first two semesters form the common preparatory year
• • The third semester and the fourth semesters are common to all departments of the
program.
• • The fourth to six semesters constitute mainly the specialization stage in MLS,
• • And the last two semesters (seven & eight) represent the subspecialty in one of the five
departments of MLS.
