Lesson Presentation Protractor Power

This document outlines a Year 5 mathematics lesson focused on measuring and drawing angles using a protractor. It includes objectives, success criteria, and step-by-step instructions for estimating, measuring, and drawing angles, as well as specific exercises for students. The lesson emphasizes the use of both semi-circular and full-circle protractors for various types of angles.

Measurement

Year One
Mathematics | Year 5 | Measurement | Draw and Measure Angles | Protractor Power! | Lesson 1 of 2
Aim
• To draw and measure angles.

Success Criteria
• I can measure angles using a protractor.
• I can draw angles using a protractor.
Estimating Angles
Which of these angles has been estimated correctly?
Explain your reasoning.

The Protractor
To measure angles, we use a protractor (angle measurer).

Here is a semi-circular protractor. Look carefully at how the

numbers on the scale count from 0° to 180° in both directions.
The Protractor
How to use a semi-circular protractor

1 First, you place the circle or cross at the centre of the

protractor carefully on the point (vertex) of the angle.
Make sure you also line the horizontal arm of the angle up with the 0°
marker.
The Protractor
Now we have to think about which direction the arm of
2 the angle is moving, because the scale on a protractor
reads from both
Left to Right and from Right to Left.
Carefully read the scale from the correct side, dependent
on how the arm of the angle is opening.
The Protractor
Now you can count the degrees carefully.
3 Each degree is marked. Multiples of 5° are marked by a
medium line, and multiples of 10° are marked by a
longer line.
Be careful to keep the horizontal line of the angle lined
up with the protractor.

45°
The Protractor
The semi-circular protractor
is
perfect for measuring acute
and obtuse angles.

But what about reflex

angles?

Don’t worry, the full circle

protractor has a scale that
measures up to 360°.

It’s perfect for measuring

reflex angles and is used
exactly the same way as a
semi-circular protractor.
The Protractor
If you don’t have a full circle protractor to use to measure a
reflex angle,
you can also use your semi-circular protractor.

60°

First, use your semi-circular protractor to measure the acute

angle.
The Protractor
If you don’t have a full circle protractor to use to measure a
reflex angle,
you can also use your semi-circular protractor.

60°

300°

360° - 60° = 300°

Then subtract this acute angle from the

known fact that a full turn angle is 360°.
Estimating and Measuring
Work with your partner to estimate the angles.

Then, use your protractors to measure the angles.

Were your estimates close to the actual measurement?

What did you find easy about using a protractor?

What did you find hard about using a protractor?

Drawing Angles
Now we will learn how to use our protractors to draw our own
angles.

Draw a straight, horizontal line (i.e. an arm of the

1 angle).
Drawing Angles
Now we will learn how to use our protractors to draw our own
angles.

Place a dot at one end of the arm.

2 This dot represents the vertex of the angle.
Drawing Angles
Now we will learn how to use our protractors to draw our own
angles.

Place the centre of the protractor at the vertex dot and

3 the baseline of the protractor along the arm of the
angle.
Drawing Angles
Now we will learn how to use our protractors to draw our own
angles.

Find the required angle on the scale and then mark a

4 small
dot at the edge of the protractor.
Drawing Angles
Now we will learn how to use our protractors to draw our own
angles.

Join the small dot to the vertex with a ruler to

5 form the second arm of the angle.

Now we will learn how to use our protractors to draw our own
angles.

Draw the arc of the angle you have drawn and write a
6 label remembering the degree sign °.

Drawing Angles
This method is perfect for drawing acute and obtuse angles.

If you are drawing a reflex angle, measure the acute angle

that brings the reflex angle to a full rotation of 360°, and label
the exterior as the reflex angle.
