SMOKING
WHAT IS SMOKING?
Tobacco smoking is the practice of burning
tobacco and ingesting the resulting smoke. The
smoke may be inhaled, as is done with cigarettes,
or simply released from the mouth, as is generally
done with pipes and cigars. The practice is
believed to have begun as early as 5000–3000
BC in Mesoamerica and South America.

FIND OUT THE TRUTH ABOUT FOLTERS, FLAVORS AND
FIBS FROM TABACCO COMPANIES.
Roll-Your-Own
Rollies (or roll-your-own
tobacco) are often
believed to be less harmful
and more natural than
factory-made cigarettes.
This couldn’t be further
from the truth.
Shisha
Shisha is a common name for
waterpipe smoking, which is a
traditional method of smoking
tobacco in the Middle East, India
and Africa. Shisha originated in
ancient Persia and India but today,
waterpipe smoking can be found
around the world. Waterpipes are
also referred to as ‘hookah’,
‘arghile’, ‘narghile’, ‘goza’ or
‘hubble bubble’.
E-cigarettes & Vaping
Using e-cigarettes (known
as ‘vaping’) is a relatively
new way that some
people try to quit
smoking. The health
effects of e-cigarettes are
still being researched, so
their long-term
effectiveness and safety
is unknown.
Some of the chemicals found in tobacco smoke include:
• Nicotine (the addictive drug that produces the effects in the brain that people are looking for).
• Hydrogen cyanide
• Formaldehyde
• Lead
• Arsenic
• Ammonia
• Radioactive elements, such as polonium
• Benzene
• Carbon Monoxide
• Tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs)
• Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
CIGARS
Many people view cigar
smoking as more
sophisticated and less
dangerous than cigarette
smoking. Yet one large cigar
can contain as much
tobacco as an entire pack of
cigarettes.
CIGARETTES
Regular cigarettes, called combustible
cigarettes, contain tobacco, added
chemicals, a filter, and a paper covering.
People who smoke them expose
themselves to over 7,000 chemicals when
they inhale the smoke from their
cigarettes. People around them are also
exposed to the same chemicals through
secondhand smoke.
Cigarette smoking accounts for almost all
tobacco-related illnesses and deaths in
the United States.
SMOKELESS TABACCO
First developed in Sweden, snus
are a "spit-free" form of
tobacco and have been
marketed aggressively in the
United States as an alternative
nicotine-delivery system in
smoke-free environments.
American snus are available in
a variety of flavors, including
spearmint, wintergreen, vanilla,
and various fruits.
PIPEPS
Smokers also often claim that
they are avoiding the worst
health dangers of enjoying
tobacco by actively avoiding
cigarettes, which they
perceive to be the worst type
of nicotine delivery system.
The common excuse is that
they smoke one or two cigars
a day and that that is nothing
compared to 20 – 30 an
average cigarette smoker
smokes.
HEATED TABACCO
PRODUCT
Like e-cigarettes, heated
tobacco products use
battery-powered devices
to heat nicotine and other
chemicals
BIDIS
Bidis (flavored
cigarettes) Bidis or
“beedies” are thin,
flavored cigarettes
that originated in India
and other Southeast
Asian countries.
KRETEKS
These unfiltered smokes are made
with a blend of tobacco, cloves
and other ingredients. Traditional
in Indonesian countries but sold
worldwide, clove cigarettes
contain the same harmful
chemicals as regular cigarettes,
including nicotine. In fact, a 2021
review pointed to high levels of tar
and carbon monoxide in kreteks,
elevating users' risks for cancer,
heart and lung issues and more.
CHEWING TABACCO
This classic form of smokeless
tobacco comes in a can, pouch or
twisted plug and may include candy-
like flavors. Users place a small
amount between the cheek and gum,
drawing out the tobacco flavor and
spitting any excess. Nicotine and
other harmful chemicals are quickly
absorbed through the mouth lining.
Chew, as it's often called, is closely
associated with mouth, throat and
pancreatic cancer as well as heart
disease, gum disease and tooth loss.
VAPING
When e-cigarettes first hit the
U.S. market, many
companies claimed they were
a healthier alternative to
cigarettes. Some ads even
suggested that vaping could
help people quit smoking or
keep them from starting. But,
just like cigarettes, these
nicotine devices are highly
addictive.
