MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGIES

MATERIALS
Construction materials are materials or substances used in the construction and
building industry. These materials can include a wide range of products such as
concrete, steel, wood, brick, glass, plastics, and more. They are used to construct
and maintain buildings, infrastructure, and other structures.
Different types of construction materials have been used in our site for different
purposes.
These are:
❖ Cement
❖ Reinforcement steel bars
❖ Aggregate
❖ Sand
❖ Water
Which are the components of reinforced concrete.
❖ Wood and its products like timber, plywood
❖ Masonry
❖ Etc.
By Abraham October 2024
CON… 9

Reinforced Concrete
Reinforced concrete is a composite material made of concrete
and reinforcing materials such as steel bars or steel fibers. The
steel reinforcement, usually in the form of bars or mesh, is
embedded within the concrete to provide additional strength and
durability.

Reinforcement steel bars

Reinforcement steel bars, commonly known as rebar, are steel
bars that are used as reinforcement in concrete structures. These
bars are typically made of carbon steel and are available in
various shapes, sizes, and grades. The purpose of reinforcing
steel bars is to provide additional strength and stability to
concrete structures by withstanding tensile forces.

CON… 10

Concrete
Concrete is a composite material made up of cement, sand,
gravel or crushed stone (known as aggregate), and water. It is
one of the most widely used construction materials
worldwide, known for its strength, durability, and versatility.
Its components are:

 Cement - which is typically Portland Cement, acts as a

binding agent that holds the other components together.

 Fine Aggregate (sand) – refers to the smaller-sized Figure: Cement

particles of aggregate used in the mixture. It helps fill the
voids between the larger coarse aggregate particles,
making the mixture more workable and easier to handle
during construction.

 Coarse Aggregate – refers to the larger-sized particles of aggregate used in

the mixture. It consists of materials such as gravel, crushed stone, or recycled
concrete.

 Water – is essential component of concrete a sit enables the chemical reaction

of hydration, resulting in the hardening and solidification of the cementitious
materials. The proper amount of water is critical for achieving the desired Figure: Coarse aggregate
workability, strength, and durability of the concrete mixture.

EQUIPMENTS
Various types of construction equipment and machineries were used at the site.
These are:
 Truck mixer
 Loader
 Concrete vibrator
 Dump truck
 Concrete mixer
 Backhoe loader Figure: Concrete mixer Figure: Backhoe loader

 There are also common tools that can be found at any construction
site like.
• Tumbi - Used to check vertical alignment for columns.
• Akafa - Used to squash the materials into the box.
• Satin (batching box) gauge box – Used to measure materials,
typically for mixing concrete. It helps achieve consistent
proportions by measuring material quantities by volume,
ensuring accurate batching of cement, sand, and aggregate for
the concrete mix. Figure: Batching box

METHODOLOGIES
In this category, I am going to show the method used by the hosting
company to ensure efficient and safe execution of the project and
achieve the desired goal. The method used at our site was the traditional
construction method. It is the most common and straightforward method
used in construction, it involves sequential steps, starting with site
preparation, followed by foundation construction, structural framing,
installation of utilities, interior and exterior finishes, and final touches.

CON… 13

Concrete production
Concrete production includes batching and mixing of concrete materials, placing of
concrete, compaction and curing of concrete. Since the entire site work is related
with the concrete work, I tried to find out more about concrete works and I
understood concrete production as the following. Manufacturing process of
concrete:
1. Batching
2. Mixing
3. Transporting
4. Placing and casting
5. Compaction
6. Curing

Reinforcement bar works

Reinforcement bar work, also known as rebar work, is a crucial aspect of construction
that involves the installation of steel reinforcement bars within concrete structures to
provide strength and stability. Here are the general procedures involved in reinforcement
bar work at us construction site after the design and plan works as well as material
assembly is completed:

OVERALL INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

I have been working at this construction site as an intern for the last four months starting from
April to July end. I selected this company because of its prominence to execute huge projects
successfully in a short period of time and the nearness for my hometown and to save transport
cost. I have been conducting on both office and site works as instructed by the office and site
engineers because as a civil engineering student I am expected to perform on efficiently both in
office and at site. The works I have been doing at office were reading the drawings, preparing
take off sheets for the structural elements, preparing bar schedule. On the other hand, I have
been participating at the site works usually by visiting the site and asking professionals to get
practical knowledge and sometimes helping the laborers with the simple tasks.
1. Office works
❖ Reading drawings
During my internship period I executed different tasks that are the same with what I learnt in
campus. The first task I was given was with the purpose to help with how to read drawings and
familiarize myself with the site and the buildings by reading structural, Architectural sanitary
and other drawings. After I got to read the drawings thoroughly, I prepared drawing inspection
report, this task has helped me in understanding drawings of a certain building and this in turn
helped me to check whether the site work is going within the specified drawing or not

By Abraham October 2024

CON… 17

❖ Quantity work (preparation of takeoff sheet for concrete and formwork quantity) Since
we have taken the course “Contract, Specification & Quantity Surveying” this task was kind of
simple since I already learned about it. The preparation of the amount of concrete and
formwork needed was relatively easy to carry out since it’s just calculating the surface area for
the form work and calculating the volume for determining the amount of concrete needed.
❖ Quantity work (preparation of Bar schedule)
The reinforcement bar is one of the essential units of a certain structural element and for this
reason it is important to determine the type and amount of steel required for a certain project.
The price of reinforcement bar in the market is per kg and the bar schedule is usually prepared
in kg.
Steps to determine the quantity of bar schedule are:
• Identifying the type of bar present in the specified member of structure.
• Identifying the similar member in the given structure to minimize repetition
• Identifying the shape, diameter and length of the bar.
• Calculating the number of bar present based on the spacing and the length.
• Then calculating the total length by multiplying the total numbers of bar with the length of
single bar.
• Then putting the value in each diameter

CON… 18

2. Site work
Site work is a crucial aspect of any construction project, serving as the foundation for successful and
efficient construction operations. It encompasses a range of activities that prepare the construction
site, establish necessary infrastructure, and create a safe and functional environment for the
construction team. From site clearance and earthworks to access roads, utilities, and security
measures, site work sets the stage for the construction process.
 Sub structural works
Sub- structural construction works are parts which includes all structures located below the surface
of the ground. This includes like footings, foundation columns and the grade beam. Here we tried to
observe in this works in keeping the alignment, the spacing and the dimension of the structures. As
we saw from the site this works need strict follow up and engineering control over to reduce the risk
of cracking, collapsing, inclining and other damages on the building during and after the construction
work. Sub structural construction works are constructed after the following activities are done which
are purposely the preparation and building of this construction parts. site clearance, bulk excavation,
setting out, and construction of the structures.

 Site visit and surveying

 Setting out of footing plan to the ground
 Removal of topsoil (site clearing)
 Bulk excavation

By Abraham October 2024

CON… 19

 Bulk excavation is the disposal of unwanted soil layer to create level surface for construction purpose. The
depth of excavation depends on the smoothness of natural ground surface and the final elevations of ground
 Procedure used
As we asked and understood about bulk excavation, it is a removal of topsoil as main shed above and the
procedure they followed: - firstly clear the area that is removing stones, trees and any other unwanted things if
any. Then next excavate the ground about 0.5-1.7m but it depends on the area because its uneven ground and
it’s excavated till the surface is level. After these processes, the last is remove this soil away from the site or
place alone.

 Foundation
Foundation is lowest part of a structure which transmits the weight of the structure together with the effect of
live loaders and pressure to the material on which the structure rests such a manner that under laying materials
is not stressed beyond its safe bearing capacity.
Generally, foundation is the lowest part of the structure placed below ground level used to increase the
stability of the structure and carry the overall load of the structure. In my internship period we are familiar
with Shallow.

CON… 20

 Ground slab
Ground floor slab is different from floor slab; it is constructed independently after grade beam is
constructed. There is no connection between ground floor reinforcement bar and grade beam; to
provide this gap there should be 20mm chipboard between it. There is only positive (bottom)
reinforcement bar. In building, concrete slab is to prevent cracks; the earth beneath it must be
compacted very well. Ground slab is begun to construct after reinforcement bar is meshed with
Ø8 center to center 150mm at middle span and 120 at the edge and ground slab has a thickness
of 15cm including concrete above hardcore.
Procedures of Ground Slab
 After hardcore is filled to the required depth reinforcement bar is meshed
 Casting of ground slab/ concrete work.

By Abraham October 2024

CON… 21

 Mat foundation
A mat foundation also known as a raft foundation is a large concrete slab that spreads the weight of a building
across the ground beneath it. It’s a type of shallow foundation that’s often used when the soil is weak, the
building is heavy, or the columns are close together.
Here are some characteristics of mat foundations:
 Spreads weight: Mat foundations distribute the weight of a building across a large area, reducing the
contract pressure on any one part of the ground.
 Suitable for certain soils: Mat foundations are suitable for low-bearing capacity soils, soft pockets in the
soil, and highly compressible soil.
 Complex design: Mat foundations can be difficult to design and construct, and they require skilled
engineering.
Difficult to alter: Mat foundations are difficult to change after they’ve been installed.
Procedure
 Site preparation: The ground is cleared, leveled, and compacted.
 Excavation: The soil is dug out to the required depth and width.
 Formwork: Wooden or metal boards are installed to support and shape the concrete.
 Reinforcement: Steel bars are placed and tied to provide tensile strength.
 Concrete placement: Concrete is mixed, transported, and poured into the formwork.
 Curing: The concrete is covered and moistened to allow it to harden.

CON… 22

2. Super structural works

Super structural works in construction refer to the elements that are built on top of the substructure, forming
the visible and functional parts of a building or structure. These works include the construction of walls,
floors, roofs, and other components that define the overall form and function of the project. The key aspect of
super structural works is the structural framework. The structural framework provides the skeleton of the
building, supporting the loads and transferring them to the foundation. The framework consists of columns,
beams, slabs, and other structural elements that form the building’s skeleton.
1. Column
A column is a vertical structural element that provides support and stability to a building or structure. It is
designed to carry the load from the superstructure (such as beams, slabs, and walls) and transfer it to the
foundation. Columns are typically made of materials like concrete, steel, or timber, and they come in various
shapes and sizes depending on the structural requirements and architectural design. At our site there were
only square columns with dimensions 50×50, 60×60, 70×70. They were designed to resist bending moment,
axial compressive stress and other lateral forces like wind and earthquake.
Constructing elevation columns involves several procedures to ensure accurate placement and alignment.
Here are the general steps involved in the construction of elevation columns:

2. Shear wall
An elevation shear wall, also known as a vertical shear wall, is a structural element in a building that is designed
to resist lateral forces, such as wind or seismic loads, acting perpendicular to its plane. It is typically constructed
vertically and extends from the foundation to the roof level or a specified height. The primary purpose of an
elevation shear wall is to provide stability and structural integrity to the building by transferring the lateral
forces to the foundation and resisting the resulting shear and bending moments. These walls are strategically
placed in the building's layout to create a system that can effectively distribute and dissipate the lateral forces
throughout the structure.
In our site I got the chance to see types of shear walls. These are exterior shear wall and interior shear wall that
is known as lift shaft shear wall.
Exterior shear walls
Exterior shear walls are commonly made of reinforced concrete or masonry, as these materials have high
compressive strength and can withstand the required loads. The walls are typically thicker and more robust
compared to non-structural walls, as they need to resist the applied forces without significant deformation or
failure.
Interior (lift shaft) shear wall
Constructing a shear wall involves several procedures to ensure its structural integrity and effectiveness in
resisting lateral forces. Here are the general steps involved at our site in the construction of a shear wall:

3. Beam
A beam is a structural element that is designed to carry and transfer loads, such
as the weight of a building or the forces applied to it, horizontally across a
span.
The general outlines of the procedures for beams
It is obvious that no structural work element can be started without plan and
designing. We need to determine the required dimensions, span length, and
load-bearing capacity of the beam based on structural calculations and design
requirements. Then we install any necessary formwork or temporary supports
to shape and support the beam during construction. After that we prepare the
necessary reinforcement bars by cutting and bending them according to the
required dimensions and specifications.
By Abraham October 2024
CON… 26

The construction procedure is detailed as follows:

First, they constructed temporary structure kristy and Ponte
keeping the exact alignment. Then the bottom formwork (soffit or
panel) is placed, leveled and position checked. After that side
Fondo
formworks were placed, and their position was checked before
being fixed. The bar benders prepare the reinforcement based on kristy
the required design. Initially they fix the top bars using column
reinforcement bars as a support then tied the stirrups, and then
finally the bottom bars are fixed. The main bars were of 16 mm kisit
diameter and the stirrups had 10 mm diameter. Finally, they sp
on
placed spacers at bottom bars and then the reinforcement bars da
placed to the prepared formwork.

CON… 27

4. Slab
A slab locally termed as soleta is a horizontal, flat, and usually reinforced structural element
used in construction. It is typically made of materials such as concrete or precast concrete and is
used to provide a solid and level surface for floors, roofs, or other horizontal structures.
The slab in our site was a flat slab that is a type of slab without beams or ribs. It provides a
smooth and uninterrupted ceiling surface, making it suitable for areas where flexibility in layout
and services installation is required.
Flat slabs are commonly used in commercial and residential buildings, as well as in areas where
a high degree of flexibility is required, such as office spaces, hospitals, and educational
institutions. Here are some key features and advantages of flat slabs:
 Construction simplicity
 Clear ceiling height
 Services integration
 Increased headroom
 Improved aesthetics
 Structural efficiency

By Abraham October 2024

CON… 28

At our site constructing a slab involved several steps and procedures:

1) During slab construction in our site, the main work to be done was construction of slab formwork or fondo
or bottom soffit. This activity took many steps and accomplished by the carpenters. It was done by nailing
ponte or kristy woods that were prepared as the desired height. They were positioned with the space of 60-
80cm interval.
2) Then after the mager was fixed that is laid horizontal on the kristy, the bottom panel soffit formwork is laid
and tied with head of the prop. Here great care must be taken for the alignment and making sure there is no
opening for leakage. Then we covered the bottom panel by using tarpaulin plastic to prevent leakage.
3) After that, the bar benders set the beam reinforcements as per design ensuring proper spacing and alignment
and inserted spacers which are known as kebeleto at site that is used to control the space between top and
bottom reinforcement.
4) Then the carpenters fixed the side panel or sponda on the side of the bottom panel making sure there is no
opening for leakage and kept the alignment of the side of the formwork by nailing the yoke or karabat.
5) Then after this the electricians installed the electrical conduit networking and sanitary pipes to run below the
mesh that will be used to carry electric wires and sanitary lines for the next floor.
6) Finally, the fresh concrete mixture is poured as per the design and compacted to make it free of air pockets.
Then it is allowed to cure and gain sufficient strength before removing the formwork or temporary supports.

3. Major Challenges and Problems Faced and Measures Taken

•In my internship period I have faced some challenges, and I have taken some measures to overcome them.
 Challenges I faced
As it was a summer the rain was a major problem. Most of the days there was a delay in work because of bad weather situation. Since we
didn’t get the chance to read drawings back in school, I had difficulties in reading different drawings. As it was my first experience at site,
it was a major challenge for me to communicate with the workers, because the words they used were unfamiliar for me, and which are
totally confusing and hard to memorize in the first few weeks of my internship period. It was a little bit hard for me to gain knowledge
because the professionals were mostly busy.
Safety material shortage: During my stay, I noticed a lack of construction safety materials like safety vests, shoes, helmets, and gloves.
For me, it was difficult to navigate without dressing those materials
 Measures taken
With the help of the professionals, I got to read the drawings, I even wrote a report about it. By becoming friendly with the workers and
trying to communicate more I was able to memorize the unfamiliar words with the help of them. I collected and wrote down my
confusions and questions and tried to ask the professionals when they were not that much busy. I tried to wear proper shoes on site to
overcome the safety issue.
 Problems encountered on the project

Drainage Channel: The area under construction was covered with rainwater and some works must be stopped till the water is pumped out.

1. ASSESSMENT OF THE INTERNSHIP

The internship program, as it is known, is offered with the major goal of enabling students to acquire the technical and
practical knowledge concerning how work is performed in the practical world in relation to their field of study. Following
this I was able to grasp technical knowledge, participate in real construction activities, working with experienced
professionals, and be successful in performing activities. Below, I have presented what I have gained in various types of
technical and practical skills.

1. In terms of improving practical skills

Practical skills refer to the abilities and knowledge that can be applied in real-life situations. They are essential for success
in various fields and can be developed through practice, training, and practical application of knowledge. Here are some
benefits in terms of improving practical skills:
 It offered me the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, allowing me to gain practical
skills and experience.
 It allowed me to gain exposure to the industry and helped me understand the work environment, industry trends, and
potential career path.
 It provided a chance for me to build professional networks and establish connections with industry, which can be
beneficial for future job prospects.

By Abraham October 2024

CON… 31

2. In terms of upgrading theoretical knowledge

The internship program gives students an opportunity to improve their theoretical knowledge. During my
internship period, I tried to refer to different books that I was thought in the past semesters and develop my
knowledge by comparing them with actual works on site. The internship experience augmented my
theoretical knowledge by providing a unique platform for intellectual ascension. It can bridge the gap
between theory and application, thereby gaining a more profound comprehension of abstract concepts.
3. In terms of improving team playing skills
Construction is group work that involves different types of professionals. Teamwork is the skill of a person
to work with other people cooperatively. To accomplish a project as planned, involved parties must work
together. During the internship period, I get the chance to improve my team-playing skills. During my
internship time, I had the opportunity to team up with other intern students while performing different tasks
at the office by forming groups. Some of the tasks, like data collection, preparation of the bar schedule, and
take-off sheet, were done in groups. This helped me share ideas and opinions with others that develop my
team-playing skills. Generally, individuals with strong team-playing skills possess certain qualifications that
contribute to effective collaboration and cooperation within a team. These qualifications include actively
listening to others, willingly cooperating and assisting teammates, openly sharing ideas and experiences,
demonstrating commitment to the team's goals, and showing respect towards fellow team members.

By Abraham October 2024

CON… 32

4. In terms of improving leadership skills

Leadership skills are very important for the successful accomplishment of any project. Leadership is the ability to lead
individuals and groups to accomplish a task effectively and efficiently. This internship period was a time to improve my
leadership skills. Embracing leadership roles within a team fosters the development of vision, effective communication, and the
ability to inspire and influence others towards a common goal.
 I gained valuable insights into the dynamics of leadership, learning to navigate challenges, make informed decisions, and
foster collaboration.

5. In terms of improving interpersonal communication skills

Construction projects involve the participation of different parties like supervisors, consultants, site engineers, foremen,
Carpenters, bar benders, different professionals and daily laborers. Internal communication and interaction between the
sections of a certain unit and between different parties of the working units is very mandatory. Based on this concept, the
interpersonal communication activities are guided by the workflow provided in the organizational structure on the site. When
working in the office, I have been followed up on and helped by the site engineer, who was my company supervisor. I had an
interactive relationship with the supervisor during the entire internship period, receiving explanations, commands, and
submitting our work results and reports.
 Communication is essential for securing cooperation individuals and achieving organizational objectives. It enhances
productivity and minimizes costs by promoting proper supervision and employee morale.
 It binds us together and promotes cooperation, creating a sense of unity and shared goals.

By Abraham October 2024

CON… 33

6. Improving Work ethics related issues

To successfully execute a project, the workers must follow work ethics. Some of the basic work ethics that I
learned in the internship tenure include honesty, punctuality, respecting each other, accountability, etc.
Punctuality of workers is shown by arriving on time at workplace and accomplishing a given task within a given
time. Respecting each other at workplace creates a good working environment. Generally having good work
ethics helps a company to be successful.

7. In terms of entrepreneurship skills

Internships, in relation to entrepreneurship skills, present a remarkable opportunity for personal and
professional growth.
 It helped me develop an entrepreneurial mindset, fostering a passion for innovation and problem-solving
