⫷Summary⫸
A young boy wanted to find treasure. He went and told his idea to Huck. Huck asked where he could
find the treasure. Tom said, "Thieves put treasure under old trees or in old houses." They went and dug
under the old tree on Cardiff Hill.They dug under the tree and found nothing.Tom said, "Let's go to the
haunted house." Huck said, "Haunted houses have ghosts." Tom said, "Ghosts only come out at night,
it's daytime now." They went to the haunted house. There was silence all around. They were both very
scared of this place. They went quietly into the house and looked around. There was neither treasure
nor ghost in the house. Tom and Huck were upstairs. "Shh," said Tom. Huck whispered."What's the
matter? Do you hear ghosts?" "No! Don't move!" said Tom. There were holes in the floor of the house
and you could see through. the holes to the downstairs. Tom whispered, "Oh no! There are two men
downstairs." One was an old Spanish man with long white hair and a big hat. The other man was small
and wearing dirty clothes. Tom whispered, "Let's listen to them." "It's hot in here and I'm tired," said the
old man. The boys were terrified to hear this man's voice. "That's Injun Joe!" whispered Huck. "What
are we going to do with $650 in silver coins? That was a good robbery!" said the dirty little man. "Now
let's take about $30 and hide the bag here. We can come back soon," said Injun Joe. The dirty little
man moved a large stone in the fireplace and took out a bag. He took some money out of the bag. Injun
Joe began to dig near the fireplace with his knife.
There was real treasure down there, and $600 was a big
treasure for two boys. Injun Joe stopped digging suddenly.
"There's something here! I think it's a box," he said. When
they opened the box, "Money!" cried Injun Joe. The box
was full of gold coins. "This is the old murrel family's
treasure, said Injun Joe. It's ours now!" "Where can we
hide this gold?" asked the little man. "Can we put it back
under the stone?" No.said Injun Joe, "the stone is not a
good place. Somebody may find it. Let's put it under the
cross tonight." While it was dark outside, the two men
took the gold and silver. Tom and Huck did not follow
them because they were afraid of Injun Joe. But they
wanted to find the "cross" and the treasure. Where was
the "cross"?
