INTRODUCTION OF MULTIMEDIA

• Multimedia is a representation of information in an attractive and interactive

manner with the use of a combination of text, audio, video, graphics and
animation. In other words we can say that Multimedia is a computerized method
of presenting information combining textual data, audio, visuals (video), graphics
and animations. For examples: E-Mail, Yahoo Messenger, Video Conferencing,
and Multimedia Message Service (MMS).
• Multimedia as name suggests is the combination of Multi and Media that is many
types of media (hardware/software) used for communication of information.
HISTORY OF MULTIMEDIA

• If you are of the mindset that multimedia is some phrase from the 1990's, guess
again. Webster's research indicates 1962 as the earliest recorded use (in
English) of the word "multimedia" which is defined as "using, involving or
encompassing several media." Media (plural of medium) in this inference,
represents any means, agency, or instrumentality through which a force acts or
an effect is produced. The multimedia concept can be traced to Paul Nipkow, a
German, who in 1884 at age 24 developed the first video disc. Nipkow combined
his video disc with Guglielmo Marconi's radio components yielding the Nipkow
system, which endured well into the 1920's as the standard for research in
video/audio projection.
• A simple example of media communications would be the telegraph, developed
in the U.S. by Samuel Morse in the mid 1800's. It is an example of a
communications system employing only "carrier" and medium. By developing "
Morse code" he was able to turn the carrier on and off, sustaining it's presence
for either a short (dot) or long (dash) duration. Easily detected by a listening
station along the line, the code could be converted to letters and words.
COMPONENTS OF MULTIMEDIA

• Components of Multimedia

The various components of multimedia are Text, Audio, Graphics,

Video and Animation. All these components work together to
represent information in an effective and easy manner.
1. TEXT

• Text: Text is the most common medium of representing the information.

In multimedia, text is mostly use for titles, headlines, menu etc. The
most commonly used software for viewing text files are Microsoft Word,
Notepad, Word pad etc. Mostly the text files are formatted with ,DOC,
TXT etc extension.
2.AUDIO

• 2)Audio: In multimedia audio means related with recording, playing etc.

Audio is an important components of multimedia because this
component increase the understandability and improves the clarity of
the concept. audio includes speech, music etc. The commonly used
software for playing audio files are:
i) Quick Time
ii) Real player
iii) Windows Media Player
3.GRAPHICS

• Graphics: Every multimedia presentation is based on graphics. The

used of graphics in multimedia makes the concept more effective and
presentable.the commonly used software for viewing graphics are
windows Picture, Internet Explorer etc. The commonly used graphics
editing software is Adobe Photoshop through which graphics can be
edited easily and can be make effective and attractive.
4.VIDEO

4)Video: Video means moving pictures with sound. It is the best way to
communicate with each other. In multimedia it is used to makes the
information more presentable and it saves a large amount of time. The
commonly used software for viewing videos are:

i) Quick Time

ii) Window Media Player

• iii) Real Player
5.ANIMATION

Animation: In computer animation is used to make changes to the

images so that the sequence of the images appears to be moving
pictures. An animated sequence shows a number of frames per second
to produce an effect of motion in the user’s eye. Some of the commonly
used software for viewing animation are:

i) Internet Explorer

ii) Windows Pictures

• iii) Fax Viewer
APPLICATION OF MULTIMEDIA

• • Multimedia in Education field: Multimedia is used to instruct as a master (guide) because nowadays, multimedia
CD are used instead of text books. Knowledge can be easily obtained by using multimedia CD in computer because
multimedia CD includes text, pictures, sound and film which helps the students to understand more easily and
clearly than the text books. For the use of multimedia as an education help the PC contains a high quality display.
This all has promoted the development of a wide range of computer based training .
• • Multimedia in Entertainment: Now a days the live internet pay to play gaming with multiple players has become
popular. Actually the first application of multimedia system was in the field of entertainment and that too in the
video game industry. The integrated audio and video effects make various types of games more entertaining.
Generally most of the video games need joystick play. Multimedia is mostly used in games. Text, audio, images and
animations are mostly used in computer games. The use of multimedia in games made possible to make innovative
and interactive games. It is also used in movies for entertainment, especially to develop special effects in movies and
animations. Multimedia application that allows users to actively participate is called Interactive multimedia
• • Multimedia in Advertising: Multimedia technology is commonly used in
advertisement. To promote the business and products multimedia is used for
preparing advertisement.
• • Multimedia in Business: The business application of multimedia includes, product
demos, instant messaging. Multimedia is used in business for training employees using
projectors, presenting sales, educating customers etc. It helps for the promotion of
business and new products. One the excellent applications is voice and live
conferencing. A multimedia can make a audience come live.
ADVANTAGES OF MULTIMEDIA

• Creativity
It brings more life to discussions.
• Variety
It caters all types of learners.
• Cost-effective
Multimedia mostly requires only a one-time purchase of devices and software, which
can be used unlimited times thereafter.

• Evaluation
It offers ideal learning assessment tools which are also entertaining for the students
. Realistic Approach

It provides approaches which make learning more realistic.

. Wide Variety of Support

Multiple media formats are available for use, with different models being able to
create multimedia.

. Trendy
The current trend of culture leans toward technology, and a great number of
resources are being made available for different media formats
DISADVANTAGES OF MULTIMEDIA

• Accessibility
Multimedia requires electricity to be operated, which may not be available in some rural areas or may not
be consistently available due to shortages and blackouts.

• Distracting
Mulitimedia may take away the focus from the lesson due to its attention-grabbing formats.

• Costly
Production of multimedia is more expensive than others because it is made up of more than one medium.
• Production of multimedia requires an electronic device, which may be relatively expensive.

• Multimedia requires electricity to run, which adds to the cost of its use.
. Time Consuming

Creating multimedia requires more time.

. Requires Mastery

Multimedia requires consistent and long practice to master, which may take a lot of time and energy
from the user.

. Limited Support/Compatibility

There is a wide variety of gadget models which arouses incompatibilities of media formats.

. Fragile
The device used for multimedia must be used with care; exposure to moisture or other elements could
cause expensive, irreparable damage which would require another purchase of a device.
FEATURES OF MULTIMEDIA

..Very High Processing Power

-- needed to deal with large data processing and real time delivery of media. Special
hardware commonplace.

Multimedia Capable File System

needed to deliver real-time media – e.g. Video/Audio Streaming. Special

Hardware/Software needed e.g RAID technology.

Data Representations/File Formats that support multimedia

-- Data representations/file formats should be easy to handle yet allow for
compression/decompression in real-time
Efficient and High I/O

-- input and output to the file subsystem needs to be efficient and fast. Needs to allow for real-
time recording as well as playback of data. E.g. Direct to Disk recording systems.

Special Operating System

-- to allow access to file system and process data efficiently and quickly. Needs to support
direct transfers to disk, real-time scheduling, fast interrupt processing, I/O streaming etc.

Storage and Memory

-- large storage units (of the order of 50 -100 Gb or more) and large memory (50 -100 Mb or
more). Large Caches also required and frequently of Level 2 and 3 hierarchy for efficient
management.
CONCLUSION

• In conclusion, multimedia possessed a lot of

advantages to make learning interesting. With the
help of its elements, it can invoke creativity in both
teacher and students so that they can apply it in
order to teach or learn. Learning also become
much more easier with the help of multimedia.
