• The building envelope has a major impact on preserving the life of the
building and protecting it from factors affecting it
ENVELOPE DESIGN

When designing the envelope three factors must be understood:

1- Water Sources

rain

Water leakage

vapor

Groundwater
ENVELOPE DESIGN

2- Design Appropriate Systems

• Using sloping roofs: Surface tension occurs due to gravity

ENVELOPE DESIGN

2- Design Appropriate Systems

• Prevent capillary water leakage
ENVELOPE DESIGN

2- Design Appropriate Systems

• Appropriate facade boundaries to prevent water leakage into
the building

3-Design each component separately
A- Facade System B – Roofing System
DESIGNING TO PREVENT LEAKAGE
There are three design methods to prevent leakage:
1- Barrier

2- Drainage

3- Diversions
It combines the previous two systems

WATERPROOFING PRINCIPLES

The 90%/1% principle The 99% principle

• 90% of the leakage problems that occur in a building are the

result of 1% of exterior surface of structure area.

• 99% of leakage problems are the result of something other

than the failure of the insulation system
SUMMARY

• All insulation components must work as one machine because one

fault will affect the entire system
