ANIMAL HOUSE INTRODUCTION
Animal culture Or breeding facilities, often referred
to as animal houses, are specialized environments
designed to provide optical conditions for the
housing, breeding, and experimentation of animals.
The primary goal is to ensure animal health and
well-being while supporting scientific research in
fields like biology, psychology, medicine, and
veterinary science. Strict regulations and guidelines
govern these facilities to ensure animal welfare and
ethical treatment. By providing a safe and controlled
environment, animal houses for research enable
scientists to conduct vital studies that advance our
understanding of biology and improve human and
animals health.
Animal House designing
Key components in design:-

1.Animal holding rooms:

Building materials:- Moisture proof, Fire resistant, seamless materials are most desirable for interior surfaces.
Corridor:- It should be enough to facilitate the movement of personnel as well as equipment’s and should be
kept clean.
Floors:- Floors should be smooth, moisture proof, skid proof.
2. Storage Area:- Separate storage area should be designed for feed, bedding, cages and materials not in use.
Refrigerated storage is essential for storage of dead animals and animal tissue waste.
3. Animal room Doors:- Doors should be rust, vermin and dust proof. They should fit properly with in their
frames provided with an observation window. Rodent barrier can be provided in the doors of the small animal
facilities.
4. Walls and Ceilings:- Walls should be free of cracks.
5. Power and lighting:- Lighting system be installed that provides adequate illumination while people are
working in the animal rooms and a lowered intensity of light for the animals. Emergency power should be
available in the event of power failure.
6. Noise Control:- Noise control is an important in consideration in designing an animal facility. Concrete
wall are more effective than metal or plaster walls containing noise because their density reduces sound
transmission.
Physical separation of animals by species is recommend to prevent inter-species disease transmission and to
eliminate anxiety and possible physiological and behavioural changes due to inter species conflict.
List of mostly used animals in experimental work and care
in laboratory animal House:-
• Mouse
• Mice
• Rat
• Hamster
• Guinea pig
• Pig
• Dog
• Cat
• Monkey
• Zebra fish
• Transgenic Fly

MICE CULTURE
Importance of Mice in Research
Mice (Mus musculus) serve as invaluable models in biomedical research for studying
genetics, physiology, behaviour, and disease mechanisms. Their genetic makeup can be
manipulated to mimic human diseases, making them essential for testing new drugs,
understanding biological pathways, and developing therapies.

Significance of Zebrafish in Research
Zebrafish are widely used in research for various reasons:

1.GeneticSimilarity: Their genome shares a high degree of similarity with humans, making them valuable for studying
genetic disorders and developmental processes.

2.Tansparency: Zebrafish embryos are transparent, allowing researchers to observe internal organs and developmental
processes in real time under a microscope.

3.Rapid Development: Zebrafish embryos develop quickly, with visible organogenesis within days, enabling studies on
embryonic development and organ function.

4.Ease of Manipulation: Techniques such as genetic manipulation and drug screening can be performed efficiently due
to their small size and external fertilization.
