AIM OF THE SESSION
The primary aim of this unit is to enhance students’ understanding of the concepts of Vovabulary-
Synonyms, Antonyms, Homonyms, Homophones and Homographs through definitions, examples, and
exercises.
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES
This Session is designed to:
1. To provide students with an understanding of usage of wide range of vocabulary
2. To enable students to apply synonyms, antonyms and homonyms effectually
3. To strengthen the language by practicing related Activities.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this session, you should be able to:
• learn the key concepts related to synonyms, antonyms and homonyms.
• identify a range of apt vocabulary correctly.
• Differentiate between homonyms and homographs.
• Apply the correct usage of synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, and homographs in sentences.

Paragraph 1:
The peaceful town of Brookside was buzzing with
excitement as the annual festival approached. Residents
eagerly decorated their homes with vibrant colors and
twinkling lights, turning the streets into a dazzling display.
Children laughed and played, their joy echoing through the
neighborhood. The aroma of freshly baked goods wafted
through the air, tempting everyone to indulge in delicious
treats. Music and laughter filled the town square as
performers prepared for their acts. The sense of
community was palpable, and everyone looked forward to
the festivities.

SYNONYMS
• A synonym is a word that has the same meaning as another word (or nearly the
same meaning).
• In other words, Synonyms are different words that have the same or similar
meanings. They come in every part of speech, including nouns, verbs, adjectives,
adverbs, and prepositions.
• Example: Good = fine, excellent, satisfactory, wonderful, superb, etc.
The Purpose of Synonyms:
• Synonyms are necessary to avoid overusing the same word.
• This will help develop better writing skills especially research paper writing.
• By alternating synonyms, your writing becomes more interesting and dynamic.

ANTONYMS
• An antonym is a word that means the opposite of another word.
• Knowing how to use antonyms can improve your writing and English skills.
• Antonyms can be all types of words: verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and even
prepositions.
• Example: hot x cold, good x bad, day x night, on x off

HOMONYMS
• Homonym can be termed as the umbrella term for words with any combination
of the same spelling or sound but with different meanings.
• Homonym is “one of two or more words spelled and pronounced alike but
different in meaning.”
• Example:
• A bat - a flying mammal; A bat - a smooth wooden club used to hit balls in
cricket
• Park - “a grassy expanse” ; Park - “a way to position a car.”
• Rock - a mineral ; Rock - a music genre.

Homographs
• Homographs are words spelt the same but have different meanings and
sometimes different pronunciations. These sets of words have the same
pronunciation but different meanings and uses.
• Example:
• Lead - a metal (pronounced “led”)
• Lead - being in charge (pronounced “leed”).
• Tear - to rip something
• Tear - a drop of water from the eye.

Homophones
These words sound the same but have different meanings and often

Example:
• Bear - the animal
