• French Polynesia
Problem
Mafatu’s mother died during a terrible storm at the sea to save her son.
So Mafatu is very afraid of the sea, it is his greatest fear. People laughed
at him on the island, because his father is the chief of the tribe, and he
is afraid of the sea. Also, he gets stuck on an island that he got washed
away on.
Facing his Greatest Fear
Mafatu faces his biggest fear, and goes on a canoe to the sea but got
struck by lighting and got washed away on the shore. He got to the
shore and explored the island.
Being Brave and not Afraid
Mafatu killed a shark using his spear fro his dog Uri who fell into the
ocean. He climbed a mountain and a wild boar attacked him, so he
killed the boar with his spear as well. He found out that there are men
eaters on the island. He finished building a new canoe, and fell asleep,
but he woke up hearing “Thump! Thump! THUMP!” He saw four canoes
and knew that the men eaters were coming. So he hopped on the
canoe with Uri, and sailed away.
Theme
• Perseverance
• Having courage at all time
• Showing people that they are wrong, proving that you are right
The Best Part of the Story
I think the best part of the story is when Mafatu decides to face his
greatest fear. To show people who don’t believe in him that he can do
it. Showing bravery, and perseverance.
The Worst Part of the Story
I think the worst part of the story was when a lot of people were
laughing at him for not wanting to go to the sea, because he was afraid.
Calling him a coward (not even behind his back). I thought it was really
mean to do that, no one should ever do that or say something like that.
My Opinion
I think I will give this book a 4 out of 5, because this is a really
interesting book. It is like a cliffhanger book, it always lets me want to
know what will happen next. I would recommend this book to someone
who does not have courage and want courage.
