BEHAVIOR BASED SAFETY &

YOU!!!

DP WORLD MUNDRA
June 2021
BBS Training

3 DISTINCT ELEMENTS OF SAFETY

1. HUMAN ATTRIBUTES
Knowledge, skills, ability, intelligence, motives, etc.
…What do you know
…What can I do
…Doing it well vs. Just doing it
BBS Training

3 DISTINCT ELEMENTS OF SAFETY II

2… WORK ENVIRONMENT:

(Equipment, tools,
machines, procedures,
facilities, etc.)
…Indoors/outdoors (osha…
no shade provided & not
enough drinking water)
BBS Training

3 DISTINCT ELEMENTS OF SAFETY III

3…BEHAVIOR: (WHAT PEOPLE DO)

 We are attracted to negative

behavior
 Who drove the speed limit this
weekend/today?
 Who texted or talked on cell
coming here today ?
 We push the envelope
BBS Training

Human behavior is both:

 Observable

 Measurable

therefore
Behavior can be managed !

NEAR MISSES:
 Unsafe behaviors don’t always result in accidents
 Near misses are golden opportunities to prevent
future issues
 Don’t ignore unsafe behavior
 We do a lot of unsafe things & get away with it..
does that make it ok?
 Eventually it will catch up to us
BBS Training

What is Behavior Based Safety

Human behavior causes most accidents
– Comfort
– Saving Time
– Convenience
– Lack of understanding and training
– Complacency
– Wrong Safety focus
– Celebrating production over safety
BBS Training

What is Behavior Based Safety

 An excellent tool for collecting data on the quality of a
company’s safety management system
 A scientific way to understand why people behave the
way they do when it comes to safety
 Properly applied, an effective next step towards creating
a truly pro-active safety culture where loss prevention is
a core value
 Conceptually easy to understand but often hard to
implement and sustain
BBS Training

SAFETY TOOLS
NEEDED:
Safety Manual
– Procedures
– MSDS Manual
– PPE
– Observations
– Audits

BBS Training

BEHAVIORAL BASED SAFETY…

 It cannot be successful standing alone

 It is an element to be used in combination with other
elements
 Can’t be the flavor of the month
 It’s not a magic bullet or shortcut…..
BBS Training

INCENTIVE PROGRAMS….
 Incentive programs
 Can give a wrong focus on
safety and health.
 They will not improve the HSE
 It will just give us more “fat
cats”
BBS Training

FOUNDATION CONCEPTS…

It is better to slay a dragon than to teach people ways to live peacefully

with him!!!

WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRADITIONAL &

BEHAVIORAL–BASED SAFETY PROGRAMS???
BBS Training

TRADITIONAL……..

 Typically, a top-down approach

 Focus on regulations & procedures
 Treats symptoms
 External enforcement

Do as i say…just do it… but when back is turned…they will

do what they want to do
BBS Training

BEHAVIORAL BASED…..
 Is a bottom-up approach
 Focus on employee behaviors
 Addresses root causes
 Internal enforcement
BBS Training

BY THE NUMBERS:
ACCIDENT/INCIDENT
Incidents…….600
Property damage... 30
Minor injury…10
Lost-time injury….1

CHANGE BEHAVIOR AT “600” LEVEL & YOU CAN

PREVENT THE OTHER 3 RESULTING ITEMS
BBS Training

$$$$ THE COST $$$$

For every $1.00 of direct
costs for injury/illness there
are up to $100.00 of
indirect costs

BBS Training

BEHAVIORAL ANALYSIS I
 What are behaviors?
 Are behaviors observable?
 Are behaviors inherently
“good” or “bad”?
BBS Training

BEHAVIORAL ANALYSIS II
 Behaviors result in positive or negative
consequences for workers.
 Immediate, sure & good consequences
reinforced.
 Immediate, sure & bad consequences refuted.
BBS Training

Unsafe Acts vs. Unsafe Conditions

 80-85% of all incidents are the result of unsafe acts;

 15-20% of all incidents are the result of unsafe

conditions.

 Question: If true, why are most efforts geared

towards unsafe conditions?
Answer: It’s easier to deal with unsafe conditions
than unsafe acts.
BBS Training

THE CHALLENGE…..

REALIZE THE VALUE

OF DOING THINGS
THE RIGHT WAY
BBS Training

Basic Safety Norms/Terms:

• Unsafe Act

• Unsafe Condition

• Nearmiss

• Accident
BBS Training

Benefits of Behavior-based Approaches

• Average Reduction of Injury Frequency
Implementation of
BBS
• After 1 year 34%
• After 2 years 44%
• After 3 years 61%
• After 4 years 71%

25
BBS Training

Why Implement BBS?

• Safety is about people.

• Compliance is not sufficient.
• Consequences drive behavior.
• Motivating
• Performance Feedback

By working
BBS Training

SafeTogether:

• We embrace a risk reduction approach in our

decisions;

• We empower personnel to speak up, act and stop

any task that presents an unacceptable level of
risk;

Remember that a ‘serious injury and fatality-free’ work

environment will only be possible if we work together…
this can only be accomplished when we are
SafeTogether.
