ALL ABOUT

ANIMALS
HOW ARE ANIMALS
CLASSIFIED?
Vertebrates
These animals have
backbones.
Invertebrates
These animals do not have
backbones.
WHERE DO ANIMALS LIVE?
ENVIRONMENT
Environment- Everything that
surrounds and affects a living thing

The environment includes:

• Non-living things, such as water • Living things, like animals, trees,

and air and grass
ENVIRONMENTS
Red pandas live in
the mountains of
Nepal and northern
Myanmar (Burma),
as well as in central
China. They like to
surround
themselves with
large forests and tall
mountains. Their
environments
contain many
bamboo trees and
fruit trees, rain, and
other animals.
HABITATS

Every animal has a place

in its environment that
is comfortable to live.
This place is called a
HABITAT.

Different animals have

different habitats.
HABITATS
Many penguins have
bodies that are good
for colder habitats.
Some penguins live
on thick sheets of ice
in extremely cold
weather. All penguins
need to live close to
water where they can
swim and hunt for
food.
HABITATS
Some animals need
warmer habitats.
This lizard’s body is
made for hot
temperatures. It can
store water for a long
time, and its thick
skin helps protect it
from getting dried
out from the sun.
WHAT ARE ADAPTATIONS?
Adaptations
help animals
survive in their
environments
or ecosystems.
Elephants are animals who have adapted to their
ecosystems.
 Body
Body coverings: Their skin protects them from the
heat of the environment. coverings
Body parts: Their trunks are used for eating grass,  Body parts
drinking water and holding onto things, like trees.
Their tusks are used for digging, throwing objects or  Behavior
even pulling down trees.

Behavior: Elephants roll in the mud to keep flies away.

HOW DO ANIMALS ADAPT
TO THEIR HABITATS?
• When an animal has
special features or
behaviors that help it
to live in its habitat,
this is called an
ADAPTATION.
A D A P TAT I O N S
Many aquatic
animals use
webbed feet to help
them swim faster to
catch prey or to get
away from
predators. Webbed
feet help animals
swim longer
distances.
ADAPTATIONS

Sharp teeth and sharp

claws are also
adaptations. Sharp
claws can be use for:
• Digging
• Helping to kill prey
• Traction for running
faster

Sharp teeth can be

used for:
• Eating animals
• Defense
• A source of power
ADAPTATIONS

A few more examples of

how animals have
adapted are scales and
shells.

Scales protect animals

from their environments.
Shells are a form of
protection too, but some
animals use them for
homes.
HOW DO ANIMALS SURVIVE?
ANIMAL SURVIVAL

• Animals use adaptations

in order to SURVIVE, or
continue to live, in its
environment.

• Also, many animals have

to hunt and eat other
animals for food in order to
survive. They want to stay
alive.
PREDATOR

An animal
that hunts
and eats
other
animals for
food is a
PREDATOR
.

In this picture, the cheetah is the predator because he is trying to eat a

gazelle for food.
PREY

An animal that is
taken and eaten by
another animal
(predator) for food is
called a PREY.

In this picture, the

lizard is the PREY
because he is being
eaten by the bird.
HOW DO ANIMALS
HIDE FROM THEIR
PREDATORS?

When an animal’s
body is a color or
shape that helps it
blend into its
environment, it is
called CAMOUFLAGE.
MIMICRY

• Besides camouflage, a
different way animals
hide from their
predators is MIMICRY.

• Mimicry is an
adaptation when an
animal changes itself to
look like a harmful
MIMICRY

The owl butterfly has a form of

mimicry to protect itself from being
eaten. It has a large "eye-spot" to
confuse predators when they attack.
The eye-spot is mistaken for the eye
of an owl.
SURVIVAL IN THE WILD IS
DIFFICULT…HOW CAN WE
HELP?
DEFORESTATION is harmful. Animals lose their HABITATS.
IRRESPONSIBLE use of animal body parts and fur is one cause of certain
populations of animals becoming ENDANGERED.
WE CAN HELP!

Be RESPONSIBLE and take care of our ANIMALS and our

EARTH.
