Introduction
Clinical experience is an important aspect of nursing
education as it is the transformation of theoretical
knowledge into practice and the cornerstone of
nursing as a health profession. Effective clinical
experience is gained through a supportive clinical
environment, which includes the atmosphere of the
clinical placement unit, and the relationships shared
with clinical staff supervisors and mentors
Clinical training is an integral part of nursing
education. Clinical practice gives students the
opportunity to make decisions, apply theories,
prioritize those decisions, learn time management,
and provides them with a chance to practice their
clinical skills
some earlier studies conducted in Iran have shown
that clinical learning is usually ineffective for
nursing students, students experience high levels
of anxiety, nursing instructors are mostly
inexperienced, and clinical learning fails to
integrate theory and practice.
barriers that nursing students face during their
education that prevent them from acquiring
sufficient professional clinical knowledge and skills
.
It is important to improve the working
environment of nursing students especially when
there are poor resources.
the study was plan to exploring the perceived
factors and barriers effecting clinical practice of
among nursing students at a selected nursing
college in dinajpur.
Justification of the Study
Once working in health and medical systems,
although novices are expected to completely use
their theoretical leanings for patients, there seems
to be a huge gap between what has been learned in
nursing and what should be applied clinically. Thus,
improvements in clinical education and related
solutions will results in significant progress in
nursing education.
This study help us to assess that which barrier
mostly effect the performance of a student in
clinical practice so that we can focus on that factor
particularly through this we can provide quality of
care to patients during clinical hours .

Sample Size Determination Technique:
A total of 150 college students were recruited of the study. In order
to determine the sample size Taro Yamane (1967) formula was
used for the study.
n=150/{1+150(0.05)2}
n=109
N= Study population 150 students nurse
e = Error margin 0.05 (5%)
n = Desire sample size, 150/1+150(0.05)*2 = 109.0909……
There fore, sample size = 110
However in the study the sample size were selected 60 students
for the study due to short time & financial burden.

Results
The study result revealed that among 60 respondents, the
mean age was 22 years
.Most of the respondents 50(83.33%) were Muslim, only

mean of monthly family income was 22,500 (±10206.54).
Majority of the nursing students 83.33% agreed that
clinical placement offers students adequate opportunity for
clinical practical learning.
Barriers to effective clinical learning was reported by 75%
of the participants and the barriers include student factors
such as lack of self-confidence and absenteeism, school
factors such as improper supervision, and poor preparation
of clinical instructors or clinical facility factors.
More nursing students (62.1%) significantly reported
unsupportive environment as a barrier.

clinical staffs are too busy to an extent that they
do not have time to guide students, 23.33 %
students reported students are there to cover
shortage instead of learning, 18.33 % students
reported inadequate number of clinical
instructors and 3.33% students also stated
improper supervision during the procedures are
the barrier for effective clinical practice.
Economic factors of nursing students were
reported to a barrier of clinical practice and
majority of nursing students agreed that parent’s
economic status affected clinical practice.48.33%
students reported that creates stressful
environment which lead to low clinical practice is
a barrier for effective practice
Failure to buy learning materials and other
personal needs is a barrier for 15% students.
Furthermore 21.67 % students reported that
low concentration in the class results in poor
clinical practice also a barrier .
The approaches of improving clinical practice
suggested by students include recruitment of

matches with the ratio of students (45%).
Utilization of bed-side teaching and proper
supervision of students (11.67%) and good
cooperation between staff and
students(3.33%).
Conclusion
The study revealed several barriers that
influence performance in clinical practice
among nursing students.
Three categories of factors were assessed,
i.e., students based factors; hospital based
factors; and social-economic background of
students.
Student’s factors seemed to play a bigger role
in successful clinical learning followed by
hospital based factors. Inadequate
supervision by clinical instructors, lack of
resources, quality of practical assessment in
clinical area, and anxiety were some of the
factors that hindered effective clinical
Conclusion continue
Student’s willingness, competency of the clinical of
instructor, and attitudes of staff towards students
in clinical area have significance performance in
clinical practice.
Taking these results into consideration, we suggest
offering preclinical orientation to the students and
distributing and clarifying clinical learning
objectives to students before reporting to clinical
placement.
supervision of students in clinical practice by nurse
tutors is essential.
this can strengthen clinical instructor nursing
students’ relationship and develop and/or build
confidence and competence among nursing
students.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The study recommends supporting and
guiding nursing students so that they can be
overcome the barrier and work within the
domain of professional practice.
Further studies should be designed to
overcome the barriers that have negative
effect on clinical practice.
Policy maker must develop strategy, protocol
or system to eliminate barriers obstacle.
