Physical Properties

• Characteristics of a substance that can be

observed or measured without any change in
its identity
• Examples: solubility, melting point, density,
electrical conductivity, physical state (solid,
liquid, gas, color)
Physical change
The material itself is
same before and after the change.
The change can usually be “reversed .” The
properties remain the same.

Ice melting: an
example of a
physical change.
Physical Change
Ripping Paper

Physical change
Origami

The form/shape may change,

but you still have paper
Physical Change
Melting bronze into a liquid

You still have bronze!

Cracking an Egg/ Beating an Egg

Another example of an physical change.

Physical Changes
1. Only the state of matter changes
2. NO new substances are formed!
3. All Phase changes are physical changes!
Chemical Properties
• Characteristics of a substance that can be
observed only when there is a change in the
property of the substance
• Describe the ability of a substance to react
with other substances or decompose
• Examples: rusting, lack of reactivity, instability
Chemical Change
The substances present at the beginning of
the change are not the same at the end;

New substances are different.

The change cannot be “undone.”

Also known as a chemical reaction.

A nail rusting: an example of
chemical change.
Evidence of a Chemical Change
• Color change
• Bubbling (formation of gas)
• Light (energy) released
• Temperature (energy) change
• Precipitate formed .
an insoluble solid formed in a
solution
Raw Egg Fried Egg

The proteins in the egg have changed! The

cooked egg cannot change back to a raw egg.
Your body chemically reacts with the food you eat to make
nutrients and energy!
Chemical Change! Rust is a new substance!
(color change)
Chemical Reaction!
Formation of a Precipitate
Chemical Reaction!
Reaction of
Formation of:
bromine &
Light
phosphorus.
Heat
Gas
Whoosh Bottle
Chemical Change
1. A chemical reaction occurs
2. New substance(s) are formed with
NEW properties
3. It cannot be reversed!
The Law of Conservation of
Matter
Matter can not be created or destroyed!
Matter can only change forms!
Atoms are conserved before and after a physical or
chemical change.
The weight of the beginning substances are equal to the
weight of the substances at the end.
