What is S P E E D ?

The measurement of how fast or


slow an object travels from one
place to another

Each moving object has speed.


Only a static object do not have
speed.

An object that moves faster:


(i)travels further in a given time
(ii)takes shorter time to travel in
given distance
Unit for S P E E D

Speed involves the measurement


of distance and time covered by a
travelling object.

The unit for speed is a


combination of both distance
and time.

Speedometer

Relationship between Speed and Distance
Aim: To investigate the relationship between the speed and the distance travelled by the toy car.
Hypothesis: As the speed increases, the distance travelled by the toy car increases too within a set of
time. Variables: Manipulated variable: Speed
Responding variable: Distance travelled by the toy
car Constant variable: Time
Apparatus and materials: Toy car, stopwatch, metre ruler and
rubber bands.

Steps:
1. Stretch and twist the long rubber band and loop the ends to the legs of a chair. Place the toy car in front of
the rubber band
2. Pull the toy car with the rubber band 5 cm backwards.
3. Release the toy car.
4. Stop the car after 3 seconds.
5. Measure the distance travelled by the toy car.
6. Repeat Step 1-5 by pulling the rubber band 10 cm backwards.
7. Recorded the distance travelled by the toy car in the table.

Observation: The toy car moves farther when the rubber band stretched
longer backwards.

Inference: The toy car speed increases.

Conclusion: As the speed increases, the distance travelled by the toy car
increases too within a set of time.

Aim: To investigate the relationship between the speed and the time taken by the toy car.
Hypothesis: As the speed increases, the time taken by the toy car decreases within a set of
distance. Variables: Manipulated variable: Speed
Responding variable: Time taken by the toy car
Constant variable: Distance travelled by the toy
car
Apparatus and materials: Toy car, one metre long
board,books, stopwatch and adhesive tape

Steps:
1. Set up the apparatus and materials as shown in the diagram
above.
2. Use adhesive tape to mark the finishing line.
3. Release the toy car.
4. Stop the stopwatch after the toy cars reach the finishing line.
5. Recorded the time taken by the toy car in the table.

Observation: The toy car takes shorter time to reach the finishing line when the ramp
is higher.

Inference: The toy car speed increases.

Conclusion: As the speed increases, the time taken by the toy car increases too
