4 Earth

and its
habitats

4.4 Different habitats

Prepared by : Tr. Zaw

Year : 4
Date : 31.8.2023
Objectives

Students will able to:

1. Explain about the sudden movements of the Earth's crust can result
in earthquakes

2. Relate the formation of tsunami with earthquake

Getting started A
Look at the two habitats in the pictures.
1 Describe each habitat.
Use the words ‘hot’, ‘cold’, ‘dry’, ‘wet’, ‘lots of
plants’, ‘few plants’.
Ans: Picture A is a hot, wet habitat with lots of tall
trees and plants.
Picture B is a hot, dry habitat with very few plants
2 Which habitat do you think has more animals
and plants? Why? B
Ans: Habitat A has more plants and probably has
more animals because there will be a lot more
food available for them to eat. But the hot, dry
habitat will have lots of different insects, small
animals and birds.
Animals are suited to their habitat

• Animals live in a habitat which suits them.

• Fish have gills to breathe underwater.
• Fish also have fins which help them to swim.
• Some types of fish live in warm water and other
• types of fish live in cold water.
Questions:
1 What do fish use to breathe underwater?
Ans: They use their gills.
2 Why do fish sometimes have to move very fast?
Which part of their bodies do they use to move fast?
Ans: They have to move away from predators (bigger fish that will eat them). They use their
fins to move fast.
3 Some people keep fish at home in a tank. This is not a normal habitat for a fish. Discuss
how the fish survive.
Ans: The water must be the same temperature the fish are used to in their natural habitat.
You must replace the water in the tank regularly.
You must feed the fish the same nutrients it gets in its natural habitat.
Put plants and stones in the tank to make it more like the fish’s natural habitat.
4 If you buy a fish to keep in a tank at home, why is it important that you keep the fish in a
bag of water until you can put it in the tank?
Ans: The fish can only use its gills to breathe in water.

Activity 2

How are tigers suited to their habitat?

Use what you have learnt in this topic to
answer questions about how tigers are
suited to their habitat. Read the
information below and then answer the
questions. Tigers live in forests in parts
of Asia. The tiger has a striped coat. The
stripes help it blend in well with the
sunlight that reaches the forest floor.
The stripes also help break up the
tiger’s body shape. This makes it difficult
for the smaller animals that tigers eat to
see the tiger. There is not very much
light in the forest but the tiger has very
good hearing so it can hear other
animals moving around.
Questions
1 Describe the habitat the tiger lives in.
Plants can also survive in places that are not their normal habitat
1 Many people keep orchids in pots in their homes. The natural habitat of orchids is a hot,
wet forest. How do orchids survive in pots in the home?
Ans: The orchid must be kept in a warm but shady place because in its natural habitat it
grows in a tropical forest which is warm, but the orchids are shaded by the trees. It must be
given the correct amount of water. In their natural habitat orchids grow on branches of trees
and rely on drops of rainwater falling on them.
2 Bamboo is a fast-growing plant. Its natural habitat is a warm, wet climate in South East
Asia. People all over the world plant bamboo in their gardens. How does the bamboo
survive?
Ans: It can survive if it is protected from frost and given plenty of water.
3 Think of plants you have growing at home. How do these plants survive?
Ans:
THANK YOU ALL!
