and Civil Engineering Works
PART IV STONE MASONARY

Scope
This standard ( Part-IV) Covers method of
measurement of stone masonry in buildings & civil
engineering works.
1-Clubbing of Items- Items can be grouped together but the group must
include a detailed breakdown of each Item according the description provided in
the standard.

2- Booking of Dimensions- The sequence should be Length, Breadth or

Width & Height or Depth or Thickness.

3- Measurements-
A) Stone masonry is measured in cubic meters,
B) Face work shall be measured in square meters, unless stated otherwise.
1. Dimensions – nearest to 0.01m
2. Area- nearest to 0.01sqm
3. Cubic content- nearest to 0.01cum

4- Description of Items- Description of Items include conveyance,

delivery, handling, unloading, storing, waste, returning of Packings, scaffolding,
4- Waste- All measurement of cutting waste (unless stated)
5- Deduction- Minimum area for deducting and opening of void,
This area refers only to the actual opening or void within the space
being measured
6- Work to be measured separately-
1. Work in or under water
2. Work in liquid mud
3. Work in or under foul positions
4. Work interrupted by tides
5. Work in snow
7-Bills of Quantities-
Items of work shall fully describe materials and workmanship, and accurately
represent the work to be executed.

8-Measurement in Stages-
a) Below ground / datum line
b) Above ground / datum line
Walling-

1. Bond Stones: Incorporating stones that tie the wall together

2. Joint Work
3. Wall Preparation
4. Rough Cutting of Stone
5. Holes for Pipes
6. Building-in Fixtures
7. Bedding Components
8. Building-in Ends
9. Openings and Flues
• Stone walling that is circular with an average
radius of up to 6 meters should be measured
separately. This measurement should include all
cutting, waste, and template

• Stone walling that is circular with an average

radius greater than 6 meters should be
measured as is and included with the general
walling measurements.
The following types of work should be included with general
walling:
A) Footings
B) Battered Stone Masonry: Angled stone masonry measured as is.
However, the angled surfaces are measured separately in square meters
as an additional cost.
C) Eaves or Beam Filling: No deductions are made for spaces around
joists or rafters.
D) Stone Walling in Chimney Features: This includes chimney
breasts, chimney stacks, and smoke or air flues.
E) Pilasters: Decorative columns or supports.
No deduction or
addition
A) Ends of dissimilar
materials ( that is joists,
beams, lintel, posts, girders,
purlins, trusses, corbels,
steps, etc) ; up to 0.1 m2 in
section

B) Opening upto 0.1 m2 in

area.
c) Wall plates, bed plates and bearing of slab, Chajjas where thickness does not
exceed 10 cm and bearing does not extend over the full thickness of wall.

D) Cement concrete blocks as for hold fasts and holding down bolts
• E) Iron fixtures,
such as wall ties,
pipe up to 300
mm diameter and
hold fasts for
doors and
windows
Works to be
Measured
Separately:
Pillars / Column:
A rectangular pillar or column is a
separate masonry structure
where:
1. The width of the pillar is no
more than three times its
thickness.

2. The thickness of the pillar is

not more than 600 millimeters
(about 24 inches).
Circular Work:

Stone walling circular on plan

to a mean radius not
exceeding 6m shall be
measured separately and
shall include all cutting and
waste and temperature.
Stone nogging :
Stone nogging should be measured in
square meters, including face work on
both sides of the wall. The thickness of
the wall should be stated, and
dimensions should be measured overall.

Stone Masonry in Arches and

Vaults:
Stone work in rough arches and vaults
should be measured separately and
include centering for spans up to 2
meters. For spans over 2 meters, the
centering is measured separately
FACINGS :
If facing stones are the same as those used in body of walling additional
work involved in dressing stones shall be described as extra over walling.

Chases and Rebates:

Cutting chases, rebates, throating's, grooves, and similar features in
walling should be measured by running meters, specifying the girth and
categorized as follows, except for throating which is measured separately:
a) <10 cm in girth.
b) b) 10 cm -20 cm in girth.
Cutting Holes:
a) Holes < 400 cm² in area.
b) Holes 400 cm²- 0.1m² in area.
Toothing and Bonding:
When new walls are bonded to existing walls, measure based on the square meters
Dressed Stone Work:
A) sills, steps, and lintels should be measured in cubic meters.
B) chajjas, jallis, and shelves should be measured in square meters.

Boulder work :-Boulder work shall be measured in cubic. metres stating size of
boulders and classified as follows:
a) Boulder filling dry hand-packed,
b) Boulder walling dry, and
c) Boulder walling in mortar stating mix of mortar.
