What is Art?

 the expression or application of human

producing works to be appreciated primarily
for their beauty or emotional power.

Art at this level is not an action or an


object, but an internal appreciation of balance

performances and dances as a decoration or symbol.

 Communication
Art, at its simplest, is a form of
communication. As most forms of
communication have an intent or goal directed
toward another individual, this is a motivated
purpose. Illustrative arts, such as scientific
illustration, are a form of art as communication.
Maps are another example. However, the
content need not be scientific.

1. Fine Arts

All fine art belongs to the general category of visual arts.
These include activities such as: Drawing, Painting,
Printmaking and Sculpture, along with associated activities
like Graphic art, Manuscript Illumination, Book Illustration,
Calligraphy and Architecture.

2. Contemporary Arts
The visual arts also include a number of modern art forms,
such as: Assemblage, Collage, Mixed-media, Conceptual Art,
Installation, Happenings and Performance art, along with
film-based disciplines such as Photography, Video Art and
Animation, or any combination thereof.

3. Decorative Arts & Crafts
In addition, the general category of visual arts encompasses
a number of decorative art disciplines and crafts, including:
ceramics and studio pottery, mosaic art, mobiles, tapestry,
glass art (including stained glass), and others.

4. Applied Art
Wider definitions of visual art sometimes include applied art
areas such as graphic design, fashion design, and interior
design. In addition, new types of Body art may also fall
under the general heading of visual arts. These include:
tattoo art, face painting, and body painting.

 Forms of creative activity that are performed in front of an
audience, such as drama, music, and dance.

Music
Music focuses on three career paths, music performance, music
education, and musicology (theory, history, etc.). Students learn to
play musical instrument, but also study music theory, musicology,
history of music and musical composition. I

Drama/Theater
Drama (Greek 'to do', 'seeing place') is the branch of the performing
arts concerned with acting out stories in front of an audience. It uses
speech, gesture, music, dance, sound and spectacle—indeed any one
or more elements of the other performing arts.
Performing Arts

Dance
Dance (from Old French dancier) generally refers to human movement
either used as a form of expression or in a social, spiritual or performance
setting. Dance' is also used to describe methods of non-verbal
communication between humans or animals (bee dance, mating dance),
motion in inanimate objects (the leaves danced in the wind), and certain
music genres.

Choreography is the art of making dances, and the person who does this
is called a choreographer.

The definition of what is dance depends on society, and ranges from folk
dance to codified, virtuoso techniques such as ballet. In sports, rhythmic
gymnastics, figure skating, ice dancing and synchronized swimming are
dance disciplines. Some martial arts have dance-like moves.
Literature

 Literature is a group of works of art made up
of words. Most are written, but some are
passed on by word of mouth.

 Literature usually means works of poetry and


prose that are especially well written.

 The word literature comes from the Latin word


"learning, writing, grammar"
Cinema

 Also known as films or movies, are a type of visual
communication which use moving pictures and sound
to tell stories or inform (help people to learn). People
in every part of the world watch movies as a type of
entertainment, a way to have fun.
Architecture

 The style of design and method of construction of
buildings and other physical structures.
 Combines knowledge of art, science, technology and
humanity.

What is Contemporary Art?

Contemporary Art refers to current and very recent


practice. It also refers to works of art made by living
artists.
