Japan occupied the Commonwealth of the Philippines
during World war II
INTRODUCTION

• Japan occupied the Philippines for over 3 years


• A highly effective guerilla campaign by Philippines resistance forces controlled
60 % of the islands mostly jungle and mountains areas
• MacArthur supplied them by submarine and sent reinforements and officers
• Filipinos remained loyal to the United State partly because of the American
guarantee of independence and also because the Japanese the pressed large
numbers of Filipinos into work details and even put young Filipino women to
brothels
HOURS AFTER PEARL HARBOR
PEARL HARBOR

• An inlet of the pacific ocean on the southern coast of


Oahu,Hawaii ,west of Honolulu.It became the site of a naval base
afte the united states annexed Hawaii in 1898 on
Sunday ,December 7,1941 Japanese planes attacked the base and
the united state entered World War II the following day
• War came unexpectedly to the Philippines Jpan surprised attacked on
the Philippines on December 8 1941 when Japan attacked without
warning just 10 hours after the attack on pearl harbor
• Japanese troops attacked the island in many places and launched a
pincher drive on MM
DECEMBER 8,1941

• Japan launched a surprised attack on the Phillippine ,just ten hours


after the attack on Pearl Harbor .Initial aerial bombardment was
followed by landins of ground troops both North and South of Manila.

• December 25,1941-Genneral Douglas MacArthur declared Manila an open city on
the advice of Commonwealth President Manuel l. Quezon to avoid its destruction
• January 2 ,1942-Japanese occupied Manila
• April 9,1942 –United States and filipino defendants in Bataan surrendered to the
Japanese
• MacArthur escaped to Corregidor the proceeded to Australia.
• The 76,000 captured soldiers were forced to embark on the infamous DEATH
MARCH to a prison camp more than 100km north
• An estimated 10,000 prisoners died due to thirst hunger and exhaustion
• In accordance the instructionof president Manuel L. Quezon to Jose
Vargas the filipino officials in Manila were told to enter into agreements
and compromises with the Japanese to mitigate the sufferings of the
people uner the iton-clad rule of the Japanese

On January 23,1942,the Philippine Executive Commision was established

• Contained 12 articles lifted from bthe 1935 constitution that fitted the wishes of
the Japanese
• It was only meant to be in effect only temporarily,while the Philippines was still in

• September 20,1943-the KALABAPI held a
partyconvention

• To elect the 54 member of the National Assembly .The
assembly was actually mae of 108 members but half of
this number wascomposed of incumbent

• The new republic was inaugurated on October 14,1943 on the
front steps of the legisstive building in Manila .The Philippine flag
was hoiste as the National anthem was played
• The Japanese startd using propaganda to gain the trust and
confidence of Filipinos who refused to cooperate with them
• They hung glant posters and distribute their materials that
contain sush slogan as:THE PHILIPPINES BELONG TTO
FILIPINOS.
• They also used news papers,movies,and others,to publicize
the same idea
• Promoting Japanese propaganda was one of themain
objectives of KALIBAPI, but still Japanese failed to gain trust
the Filipinos
