INVESTIGATING THE INFLUENCE OF

CYBERBULLYING ON THE ACCADEMIC

PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS: A STUDY
CONDUCTED IN FOUR SECONDARY SCHOOLS
IN KABWE DISTRICT.

PRESENTER: TEDDY MPUNDU

KNU: 20201049
COURSE: ICT with EDUCATION
OUTLINE:
1. Background study
2. Statement of problem
BACKGROUND STUDY
• The widespread incorporation of modern technology in
daily life has led to the emergence of cyberbullying, a
prevalent problem affecting secondary school students
worldwide (Michel, 2011).
• While technology facilitates connectivity and information
exchange, it also precipitates emotional stress among
students, adversely affecting their academic performance
(Juliana, 2010).
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

• Bullying hinders students from attaining high academic

performance. It appears that technologies, instead of
aiding their progress, are, in certain aspects, introducing
additional stress to young individuals through
cyberbullying.
• PURPOSE OF STUDY
 The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of
Cyberbullying that on the academic performance of pupils
of four selected Secondary Schools in Kabwe district.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
1. To assess the prevalence of cyberbullying among
secondary school students in Kabwe district.
2. To examine the psychological and emotional impacts of
cyberbullying on secondary school students of kabwe
district.
3. To investigate the correlation between cyberbullying
experiences and academic performance of students in
selected secondary schools in kabwe district.
RESEARCH QUESTION
• What is the current prevalence rate of cyberbullying among
secondary school students in the chosen area?
• How does cyberbullying affect the psychological well-being of
secondary school students?
• How do different forms of cyberbullying impact students'
concentration and engagement in academic activities?
• SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
• This study seeks to enhance our understanding of the diverse
effects of cyberbullying on students, with the goal of aiding the
creation of well-informed strategies and interventions that
foster a safer and healthier educational environment.
OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS
• Cyberbullying: aggressive behaviors conducted through
digital platforms or electronic communication
• Academic Performance: the measurable outcomes of
students' educational achievements
• Prevalence of Cyberbullying: frequency of cyberbullying
occurrences within a specific population or context
Psychological Well-being: the overall mental health and
emotional state of secondary school students,
encompassing aspects such as stress levels, anxiety, and
general emotional stability.
THEORIES
• Psychosocial Stress Theory:
• According to Lazarus and Folkman. (1984), the theory posits that
encountering cyberbullying prompts psychosocial stress, resulting in
adverse emotional and psychological outcomes that could influence
academic achievements.
• Social Cognitive Theory:
• According Bandura, A. (1986) to this theory, individuals learn from
observing others. In the context of cyberbullying, students may model
behaviors they witness online, affecting their own well-being and
academic engagement.
