HISTORY
Minimalism emerged in New York in the early
1960’s among artists who were self-consciously
renouncing recent art they thought had
become stale and academic. Artists such as
Frank Stella, whose Black Paintings were
exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New
York in 1959, began to turn away from the
gestural art of the previous generation. And by
1960’s and 1970’s, Minimalism had flourished
with Carl Andre, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, and
etc. becoming the movement’s most important
innovators.
WHAT IS MINIMALISM?
Explain in 1,000 words.
MINIMALISM
Minimalism favored the cool over the
dramatic, emphasizing anonymity
over the expressive excess of
‘Abstract Expressionism’. Painters
and sculptors avoided over
symbolism and emotional content,
but instead called attention to the
materiality of the works.
