BEARINGS

Bearings
• Bearings are machine elements that allow components to move with respect to
each other.
• There are a wide range of bearing types, the selection of the right bearing
suitable for the application and specify it is job of the design engineer
• Fluid bearings are frequently used in high load, high speed or high precision
applications where ordinary ball bearings would have short life or cause high
noise and vibration

Bearings selection ensures that:
• The bearing fits into a space which is available in the mechanical design
• The bearing can take the load as a result of being used in that application
• The bearing should be able to withstand environmental conditions
• The bearing runs fora specific number of cycles before losing its performance
• The bearing can run at the operating speed without problems
• The bearing can be easily assembled and dissembled
• The frictional properties are sufficient for application
• Lubrication
• The bearing takes care of possible misalignments and deflections

Ball Bearing Construction

1. Outer raceway groove / outer ring

2. Ball
3. Cage (to hold the balls together)
4. Inner raceway groove / inner ring
5. seal
Loads on a bearing
Deep Groove Ball Bearing

• Most Commonly
used
• Easy to maintain
• Connot handle
heavy axial load
Angular Contact Ball Bearing

• Contact line is not

normal to shaft axis
• Forces are
transferred are at an
angle
• Best suitable for
combined loads and
high axial forces
along with high
radial forces
Self Centering Ball Bearing

• Double row of balls

with a special feature of
a spherical outer ring
raceway
• Allows the inner
raceway to swivel
within and align with
change in angles of
shaft
• When misalignment can
be a problem in housing
Thrust Ball Bearing

• Operate solely on thrust

forces or axial forces
• Loacate the shaft in
axial in one direction
• Cannot take radial loads
Regular Cylindrical Bearing

• Optimizes distribution
of stress due to more
contact area but also
higher friction
• Very high radial load
rating as compared to
ball bearing
Needle roller Bearing
• Special type of cylindrical
roller bearings
• Long thin rollers with ratio
of diameter to length as
1:3 to 1:10
• Only suitable for radial
forces
• Axial forces aren’t taken
easily
• Best used when radial
space is constrained
• lightweight
Tapered roller Bearing

• Tapered raceway and

roller has variation in
diameter
• The contact angle is not
normal hence the setup
can take up heavy radial
and axial loads.
Spherical roller Bearing
• Work on the same
principle as self aligning
bearing
• They use spherical rollers
instead of ball with higher
load bearing capability
• Can work with
misalignment
Thrust roller Bearing

• Can take higher amount of

thrust load than ball
bearing
• Minimal amount of radial
load
