15. CONCLUSION
INTRODUCTION
 Helicopter lighting systems are essential
for safe flying, especially at night or in
poor visibility.
 They include various lights for visibility,
navigation, and communication, like anti-
collision and position lights, helping
pilots see clearly and stay safe in the air.

TYPES OF HELICOPTER LIGHTS

Helicopter consists of 4 types of

lights:

1.Position lights
2.Anti collision lights
3.Search light
4.Landing light

15/11/2024 5/24
Position Lights
 Position lights show the relative. position of an aircraft

These lights consist in three colors:

Green: this light is located on the right hand side of the aircraft.
Red: this light is located on the left hand side of the aircraft.
White: this light is located on the tail of the aircraft.
 If green light is visible on the left and red light on
the right, the aircraft is approaching in front of
us; collision is possible
 If white light is visible in the middle, red
light on the left and green light on the right,
the aircraft is flying in the same heading in
which we are flying, collision is remote

15/11/2024 6/24
ANTI-COLLISION LIGHTS

 Anti-collision lights are located at the top

and/or at the bottom of the aircraft. These
lights are red or white

 these lights are used when the aircraft

engines are running or when the aircraft is
going to make some movement on the
platform.

Landing Lights
 Landing lights are used for night take off or landings; these
lights are located at the front of the helicopter, over the
auxiliary gear

 Landing lights can be used as taxi

lights at the moment of
performing an aerial or rolled taxi.
 These lights are used to illuminate
the runway and also to make us
visible to other traffic or to the
tower.

15/11/2024 8/24
SEARCH LIGHT
 Search lights are located at the front of the aircraft above the
auxiliary gear or above the main gear, above left or right gear.
 This light can be moved with a switch located on the cyclic.
 The main use of this light is to
search something in the
surroundings of the aircraft, and it
has more importance in SAR
missions.
 Helicopters have one light at the
bottom which is used to illuminate the
cargo hook during night operations

Arduino Uno Implementation for Lighting System

• Arduino Uno manages real-time light control

for the helicopter.
• Sample code allows custom navigation and
strobe light patterns.
• Key functions include setup, loop, and
customizable light sequences.
• Sensors like LDRs adjust lighting automatically
based on conditions.

15/11/2024 11/24
LIGHTING COMPONENTS AND TECHNOLOGY
ARDUINO IDE
• Open-source, free
software for
programming Arduino
boards.
• Beginner-friendly,
using simplified C/C++
language.
• Includes libraries for
sensors and modules.
• Enables one-click
code upload to boards
via USB.

FUNCTIONAL ROLES OF THE LIGHTS

Night and low visibility Operations:- 1. Improves pilot sight.

2.support safe landing
3. helps navigate at night.

Collision Avoidance :- 1.Prevents in- air collisions.

2.Signals helicopter position to others.
3.Reduces Blind spot risk.

Ground Operations:- 1. Illuminates landing Zones.

2. signals to ground crew during takeoff and landing.

CASE STUDIES AND APPLICATIONS
 Modern Lighting Systems: Utilizes energy-
efficient LEDs for improved visibility.
• Enhances reliability and reduces
maintenance.

 Enhanced Safety Features: Automatic

brightness adjusts based on surrounding
light.

 Real-World Applications:
• Critical for safe operations Bright anti-
collision lights minimize accident risks.
• in search-and-rescue missions.
• Employed by military helicopters for stealth
and visibility control.

CHALLENGES FACED
• Our initial plan was to develop a servo-
type controller for the helicopter's
navigation light system, but we faced
challenges in implementing and manually
controlling it using a joystick, which led to
our project's failure in this phase.

• Currently, we are focusing on creating an

automatic movable servo for the
navigation light, aiming to improve
functionality and achieve better
performance.

CONCLUSION

 Successfully designed and implemented an advanced aircraft

lighting system using energy-efficient LED technology, enhancing
visibility, safety, and compliance with aviation standards while
improving reliability and longevity.

 Highlighted the critical role of effective lighting in supporting pilot

situational awareness and passenger safety, paving the way for
future innovations in adaptive lighting systems and advancing
aircraft design and functionality.
