Colloids- are the mixtures in
which the particles are
dispersed throughout and not
heavy enough to settle down. It
cannot be separated by
filtration.
Non-uniform mixtures- are
also called heterogeneous
mixtures. Particles are
distributed non-uniformly.
• A suspension that contains extremely small particles is
called a colloids. Not all suspension contains substances
that separate.
• Its somewhat like a solution
• The particles are too small to be seen, they are larger
than particles in a solution.
• It do not settle out of the mixture because molecules
move rapidly and collide.
• Collisions resist the natural tendency of the particles to
settle because of gravity.
• it is use for lubricant
Importance and Uses of Colloids

Colloids play an important role in our daily

life. We use them at home and in our daily
activities are also important in making different
products. the following are the application of
colloids.
• 1. Colloids are use in dialysis. During
dialysis, particles of colloids from those
of the crystalloids are separated by
means of diffusion through suitable
[Link] is also used in artificial
machine to stimulate the action of the
human kidney
2. Colloids are, used in pottery. Beautiful
vases, figurines, and plates are produced from
colloids. The potter makes paste by mixing
ground quarts, feldspar, and white clay or kaolin
in a small amount of water, making it easy to
make in the potter's wheel.
3. colloids are used in the artificial fiber
industry. These are used to separate
alkali from colloidal materials.
4. Colloids are used in pharmaceitical
industry. They are used in the
purification of colloidal medicine.
EMULSION- one liquid disperse in [Link] are
colloids which consist of tiny droplets of one liquid spread
through another.
 mayonnaise (vinegar and oil plus egg yolk- is a
emulsifier)
 milk is maid of tiny droplets of liquid fat spread through
water.
 Paint is made of tiny droplets of colored oil spread
through water.
 French dressing is made of drops of olive oil in vinegar.
 salad dressing
 mayonnaise
 shampoo
 mud
Foam consists of tiny bubbles of gas spread through a
liquid.
 ice cream which is foam consist of tiny bubbles spread
through milk and ice.
shaving cream consists of tiny bubbles spread through
soap.
whipped cream
lotion
Sol is a solid dispersed in a liquid. Paste is a sol which
consists of powdered starch mixed with water.
liquid glue
 pigmented ink
 paste
 slime
Gel is a solid or semi-solid colloidal system. They set and
harden.
 jelly
 gelatin
 boiled or fried egg
 butter
 margarine
Aerosol consists of a solid or liquid dispersed in a gas.
 smoke
 mist
 dust
 hair spray
 insects spray
• Sometimes may appear to be transparent like a solution
• Path of beam of light through it.(tyndall Effect)
• Brownian movement-constant random motion of the
particles in a [Link] can be seen under special
microscope.
• Examples
1. white colloids floating around the clouds (liquid and gas)
2. blood( solid and liquid
Tyndall Effect- is the scattering of
the light as light beam passes
through a colloid.
There are different types of colloids
such as sol, emulsion, aerosols,
foams and gels.
