Many

The word many means a lot of. We use many with plural
nouns.

Examples
• There are many books in the library.

• How many hours did you watch TV?

Much
Much is used with uncountable nouns to indicate a large
quantity. It is mostly used in negative questions or
sentences.

Examples
• There is much gas left in the car.

• I don’t have much money.

• How much milk do you drink every day?

A lot of, Lots of
A lot of and lots of have the same meaning. Both are used
to indicate a large number of amounts.

If A lot of (lots of) is followed by a plural noun, the word

can be replaced by many, and if it is followed by a singular
noun, it can be replaced by much.

Examples
• There were a lot of (lots of) tourists on 5th street.
= There were many tourists on 5th street.

• We don’t have a lot of (lots of) food.

= We don’t have much food.
