History of Reflexology
THE ORIGIN OF REFLEXOLOGY
Ayurveda, a unique mode of treatment using herbs,
mineral, oils, metals. different elements and body
manipulation to affect a cure for different maladies
and illness. started in INDIA ABOUT 6.000 years ago
and it spread to SRI LANGKA. JAPAN and CHINA
History of Reflexology
From which SHIATSU or FINGER PRESSURE
developed in JAPAN and ACCUPUNCTURE in CHINA,
both are inspired practice of ACCUPRESSURE,
manipulating different points of the body. lt was
widely spread yet dormant for 1,000 years till
rediscovered in 1900.

Dr. William Fitzgerald researched on
Reflexology, with direct pressure producing
anesthetic effect on different body parts. He
had a system divide the body into zones or
channels and meridians.
History of Reflexology
Associates like Dr. Edwin Bowes, Dr. George Starr
White and Dr Joseph Riley Shellby made their
contributions. Eunice lngram developed Foot
Reflexology. So reflexology was developed by
medical practitioners but originated in the orient
east.
DEFINITION OF REFLEXOLOGY

Study of reflex points of the body in


relation to the rest of the body science of
the body manipulation wherein a positive
response is affected is brought out. A
gentle healing system when applied
properly.

RULES OF REFLEXOLOGY

Don’ts:
-- Do not treat a patient within 30 minutes before and after meal
– Do not treat a pregnant patient especially in their first trimester
– Do not treat an intoxicated patient
– Do not indulge in small talk during the session
– Do not diagnose
– Do not make promises

Don’ts:
– Do not palpate sensitive areas like thoracic, abdominal and pelvic
areas
– Do not discuss another patient with another
– Do not involved sexually with your patient
– Do not borrow things or money from your patient
– Do not Press against bones
– Do not press against calluses.

– Do not press traumatized areas


– Do not apply pressure beyond tolerable limits
– Do not rub, pinch, stab, slap or knead
– Do not smoke or eat during treatment
– Do not Prescribe medication

Cut nails to a minimum and keep them clean
Bring all you need for the treatment
Partake a food and drink only when offered
Be courteous and Professional.

– Ask the patient first if he/she is sick


– Ask the patient to remove all his/her jewelries
– Put a minimal amount of alcohol on your hands
and other to the patients hands
– Start the treatment

 Press and slide
 Finger waking
POINTED PRESSURE
Light - for infants and child
Light to moderate - For elementary and
pre-elementary
Moderate - for high school and first time .
Moderate to heavy - regular patients
Heavy – Obese and hard labor

7. Back of the hand - for breast cancer and cyst
8. The wrist – for reproductive organ and increase
