About Public Works Department -
The Public Works Department execute the construction, improvement, strengthening and
maintenance of roads and bridges. The responsibility of construction of certain buildings of the
state government and their maintenance is also upon this department.
General Responsibilities of PWD:
• Planning, Construction, and Maintenance: They
plan, build, and maintain public
infrastructure like roads, bridges, buildings, and
irrigation systems.
• Budget Management: The PWD manages the
budget allocated for these civil works
projects.
• Technical Advice: They advise the government on
technical matters related to public
works.
About Project-
• Project Name: Widening and Strengthening of the road from Mandi Mirja
Khan to Samara Daudpur, UP to the Rajasthan border (via other district
route).
• Location of project: This route originates on the right side of Fatehpur
Sikri and goes till Rajasthan Border connecting Samra , Daudpur and
famous Hanuman Temple.
• Length of road: 11.35 Km
Initial Width of road: 5.5 m
• Total cost of the project -
₹18.74 Crores
• Duration of Project- About
5 Months
MAP OF PROJECT
PROJECT BRIEF -
• The total length of road is 11.35 KM and initial width was 5.5 m.
Thickness of average granular crust was 400 mm . The road is
widened by 7 m. The route is owned by PWD . Population of the route
was more than 10 thousand . Due to road being 5.5 m wide , farmers
and regional people have to face a lot of difficulties in passing through
the road . Therefore there was great need for widening and
strengthening of the road .
• 9.2 KM length of road was constructed as Bituminous Concrete.
• 2.15 KM length of road was constructed as Cement Concrete. (part of
road which passes through village or populated area).

Quality Control -
Material Testing –
For Fine Agg. and Soil –
• Proctor Test (For MDD & OMC) (IS 2720 Part 7)
• Sieve Analysis (IS 2386 Part 1)
• CBR Test (IS 2720 Part 16)
Tests on Aggregates-
• Aggregate Crushing Test (measures Strength)
• Impact Value Test (measures Toughness)
• Los Angeles Abrasion Test (measures Hardness)
• Elongation Test
• Flakiness Test
Tests on Bitumen -
• Stripping value Test
• Viscosity Test
• Ductility Test
• Penetration Test
• Softening Point Test
Construction Steps Highlights -
• Soil excavation work of 2 m width on both sides of 11.35 km of road
• GSB work of 250 mm thickness(in 2 layers) on both sides of road
• WMM work of 150 mm thickness on both sides of road
• Prime Coat and then Tack coat on 9200 m length of road
• DBM work of 85 mm thickness on 9200 m length of road
• Bituminous Concrete work of 30 mm thickness on 9200 m length of
road
• Cement Concrete work on 2150 m length of road
Construction of Granular Sub-base (GSB):
• GSB Material: The material used is mixture of natural sand,
gravel, crushed stone
• Spreading of GSB Layer: The GSB Material is spread with
the help of motor grader in 2 layers
During spreading and mixing by grader in site, water is sprinkled over
the material
Immediately rolling is started with vibratory roller
Rolling is done from lower edge towards upper edge
Construction of Wet Mix Macadam-
• Wet Mix Macadam(WMM) work includes laying and compacting
clean, crushed, graded aggregate and granular material premixed with
water in 2 layers (each of 75mm)
• Mix is spread by motor grader
• Compaction of WMM shall start immediately after laying is
completed. The compaction shall be completed with the help of a
vibratory compactor.
Construction of Dense Bitumen Macadam-
• Material- Well-graded crushed aggregates with a specified size range,
typically 19 mm to 25 mm are used. The aggregates should be clean
and free from impurities.
• Mixing – Aggregates are mixed with bitumen in a hot mix plant at a
controlled temperature. The aggregates are heated to around 150-
170°C, and bitumen is added at around 160-180°C.
• Laying- Hot Mix is evenly spread with the help of pavers
• Initial Compaction is done by tandem rollers when mix is still hot
• Final compaction is done by vibratory rollers
Construction of Bituminous Concrete(BC)-
• Bituminous concrete(Asphalt Concrete) is made up of coarse aggregate,
fine aggregate, mineral filler, and bitumen, which result in a high degree of
stability and toughness. It is used to made surface course.
• Asphalt concrete mix is prepared in the Hot Mix Plant as per the approved
mix design complying with MORTH specifications.
• Immediately after receiving the transported materials from the hot mix
plant at site, the Paver started to spread the mix on the prepared DBM
surface.
• Compaction asphalt concrete layer is completed before the temperature of
the asphalt mix falls below 115°C.
• Rolling is done at the edges and progressed towards the centre
longitudinally and wheels of rollers are kept lightly moistened with a water
sprinkler .
Construction of Cement Concrete(CC) -
• Components of cc pavement are – Subgrade , GSB(drainage layer),
Dry Lean Concrete , Pavement Quality Concrete slabs (PQC)
• Materials Used- OPC , Coarse aggregates , Fine aggregates , water and
admixtures
• Steel dowel bars are used for load transfer across in expansion and
contraction joints
• Plain or twisted bars are used as tie bars in longitudinal joints
• Dry Lean Concrete (DLC) is cement concrete with low slump as well
as low cement which is being laid as a first layer for rigid pavement
over sub-base (GSB) , rolled & compacted by mechanical means and
water content is kept low in this layer .
• the concrete is transported with the help of manually carried pans or
wheelbarrows on site.
• The topmost layer should be laid to the prescribed camber, gradient and
provided
• Voids must be eliminated by rolling and vibrating the mix while placing
• In order to provide an even surface free of corrugations throughout the
pavement, the entire slab surface should be floated with wooden flat
boards.
• The concrete slab must be checked for loss of water regularly and must
be kept moist during the hardening period. Initial curing is for 24 hours .
