CHAPTER 1

ENGINEERING
PROFESSION

FB10104_BASIC OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

2
INTRODUCTION
Engineering has evolved and developed as practical art and a
profession over more than 50 centuries. Historical studies of
engineering teach people respect for the past and its
achievement.
The concept of engineering has existed since ancient times as
humans devised fundamental inventions such as the pulley,
lever, and wheel. Each of these inventions is consistent with
the modern definition of engineering, exploiting basic
mechanical principles to develop useful tools and objects.

The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology

(ABET) defines engineering as “the profession in which a
knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained
by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to
develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and
forces of nature for the benefit of mankind.”

DEFINITION OF ENGINEERING
Engineering is a branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building,
and use of engines, machines and structures.
(Oxford Dictionary)

Engineering is an art or science of making practical application of the knowledge

of pure sciences, as physics or chemistry, as in the construction of engines,
bridges, buildings, mines, ships and chemical plants.
([Link] dictionary)

Engineering is the application of science to the common purpose of life.

(Count Rumford)

Engineering encompasses science and art, mathematics and creativity, models and
approximations in solving real-world problems.
(John Hopkins University)

Who is ENGINEER?
The word of “Engineer” comes from Latin word “Ingeniare”, meaning “to contrive”, “invent” or “devise” and
Latin word “Ingenium”, meaning “cleverness”.

A person who has engineering qualification and practices engineering

A person who were trained in the design, construction, and use of engines
or machines, or in any of various branches of engineering.
A person who operates or in charge of a power plant system in term of
operation, repair and maintenance.

A consultant in their respective area of expertise.

A skillful manager who manages the implementation of the engineering

related.

An applier of science and technology for the benefit of humankind

12
ENGINEER - Characteristics
Engineer requires sophisticated and specialized skills.

They expert in a particular area of activity which requires a high level of

theoretical foundation.
They mastered in a clearly definable and valuable body of knowledge and
understanding.
They accept responsibility and accountability for the decisions they make
against standard conduct and values.

They apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to the analysis

and solution of engineering problems.
They provide technical, commercial and managerial leadership.
They create useful products and systems through design and manufacturing/
construction for the benefit of humankind.
They apply creativity - playing with imagination and possibilities, leading to
new and meaningful connections and outcomes.
13
ROLES of ENGINEER
• Engineer plays a key role in “supporting the growth and development of a
country's economy as well as in improving the quality of life for citizens”.
• Developed countries like South Korea and Singapore have been investing
heavily in engineering education because they see quality engineers as the
wealth of the nation.
• To be competitive and enable the transition to K-economy (knowledge
economy), Malaysia needs to have engineers who are capable of doing
research, design and product development.

14
ROLES of ENGINEER
1. Engineers encompass science and art, mathematics and creativity, models and
approximations in solving real-world problems.

Engineering Technologist are trained engineering
professionals who work with engineers and help them
with many of their duties. Engineering Technologists
support research and development activities within a field
or specialization of an engineering discipline through the
application of known engineering principles and practices
in order to develop new concepts, products, equipment, or
processes. While engineers are more theoretical,
analytical, and design-oriented, the
engineering technologists are more hands-on
and applications-oriented.

PROFESSIONAL
ENGINEER (PE)
A Professional Engineer (PE) is an engineer licensed
by a state board of registration to practice
engineering. A professional engineer is competent by
virtue of his fundamental education and training to
apply the scientific method and outlook to the
analysis and solution of engineering problems. He is
able to assume personal responsibility for the
development and application of engineering, notably
in research, designing, construction, manufacturing,
managing and in the education of the engineer.

Professional Engineer:
Requires at least the equivalent of the competencies in a four year full time Bachelor’s Degree in engineering.
