Battery Energy Storage

Solution
Introduction to Battery
Energy Storage Solutions

 Battery Energy Storage Systems are rechargeable

batteries that store energy from solar panels or the
electric grid and deliver it to home or company when it
is most needed.
How Battery Energy
Storage Works
 During daylight, the battery storage system is charged
by clean electricity generated by solar or wind energy,
then the intelligent battery software uses algorithms to
coordinate solar production, usage history, utility rate
structures, and weather patterns to optimize when the
stored energy is used.

 Energy is discharged from the battery storage system

during times of high usage, reducing or eliminating
costly demand charges.
Opportunities for Battery Energy
Storage Systems in India

 The India battery energy storage systems market is

expected to rise at a CAGR of approximately 10.5%
during the forecast period of 2022-2027.
 Key drivers:
 1. Declining cost of energy storage technologies
 2. Grid flexibility

 Lithium-ion battery type is expected to dominate the

market due to favorable chemistry and low cost.
 Growth of renewable energy projects is a significant
opportunity.
 Government initiatives promote energy storage
deployment.
Roadmap for Energy Storage
System in India (2019-2032)

 The India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) developed an Energy

Storage System Roadmap for 2019-2032.
 Collaborated with India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA),
funded by the MacArthur Foundation.

Project outcomes:
 1. Energy Storage Roadmap for 2019-2022, 2022-2027,
2027-2032
 2. Energy Storage India Tool (ESIT)
 3. Guidelines for assessing hosting capacity of rooftop
solar PV on low voltage distribution lines
Key Areas for Energy
Storage Applications

 1. Integrating Renewable Energy with transmission and

distribution grids

 2. Setting up rural microgrids with diversified loads or

stand-alone systems

 3. Developing storage components for electric mobility

plans
Energy Storage Market
Segmentation

 1. Grid Level Market: Wind, Solar, Ancillary Services,

Distribution Utility ESS Integration, Transmission Deferral

 2. Behind the Meter: Electrical and Thermal segments

(Rooftop Solar, Diesel replacement, Inverter Back-up,
UPS Back-up, Telecom, Rural Electrification)

 3. Railways
Energy Storage Estimations for
MV/LV (MWh)

 India aims to reduce emission intensity by 33%-35%

from the 2005 level by 2030 and target 40% non-fossil
fuel-based electricity generation.
 Requires radical measures to scale up renewable energy.

 New targets for RE by 2030: 350 to 500 GW .

Energy Storage Estimations for
MV/LV (MWh)
Consolidated Energy
Storage Roadmap
 Total requirements of ESS for grid support: 17 GWh by
2022

 For e-mobility: 40 GWh

 Total from all sectors: 178.5 GWh by 2022

 Depending on economic growth and infrastructure

development, this could be above 100 GWh.
Consolidated Energy
Storage Roadmap
Government Initiatives

 Support for domestic battery manufacturing received

bids totaling 130GWh.

 'Champion Sectors' incentivized through Production

Linked Incentive scheme.

 Battery Swapping Technology policies under

consideration.

 SECI tender for 2000MWh standalone energy storage

projects.
Players in Energy Storage
Landscape
 Key players in the market
Key Challenges

 1. Low Mineral Reserves: Lack of key components

(Lithium, Cobalt, Nickel, Copper)

 2. Early Stage battery manufacturing industry: No

major producers of EV batteries, lack of facilities

 3. Lack of coordination among stakeholders: Need for

defined technology pathways and aligned investment
strategies

 4. High Perceived Risk: Uncoordinated efforts and

nascent stage of battery manufacturing increase
investment risks
