RELIGIOUS EDUCATION I

Marriage and Jesus

GOSPEL READING
A Reading from the Holy Gospel according
to Saint Matthew, chapter 19, verses 1 to 6
MARRIAGE AND JESUS
Jesus Affirms the Institution of Marriage
"For this reason a man will leave his
father and mother and be united to
31
his wife, and the two will become
one flesh."

This is a profound mystery —but I

32 am talking about Christ and the
church.
To better understand marriage is to
examine the teachings of Christ from
the gospel reading. In the gospel,
Jesus was asked about the
indissolubility of marriage. “And
Pharisees came up to him and
tested him by asking, ‘Is it lawful to
divorce one’s wife for any cause?’”
“Have you not read??”
The Tagalog term for "indissolubility"
can be translated as "hindi matutunaw" or
"hindi matatanggal." In the context of
marriage, it can be more appropriately
translated as "hindi mababali" or "hindi
mapapawalang-bisa. "So, if you want to
refer to the indissolubility of marriage,
you can say "hindi mababali ang kasal" or
"hindi mapapawalang-bisa ang kasal."
Jesus answered the question by affirming the
manufacturer’s instructions from the
beginning, “Have you not read that he who
made them from the beginning made them
male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a
man shall leave his father and mother and be
joined to his wife, and the two shall become
one flesh?’ So they are no longer two but one
flesh. What therefore God has joined
together, let not man put asunder.”
Why are there Christian
marriages breaking up
today?
Divorce is a marital issue being talked
about by the ordinary folks, people in the
show business, and even in the congress.
It is a pastoral concern that is directly or
indirectly affecting many individuals in the
Church today.
Divorce, the act by which a valid
marriage is dissolved, usually freeing the
parties to remarry.
In a similar way that Jesus answered by recalling
what was taught from the beginning, we too must
recall the words exchanged on the wedding day,
when the bride and groom promised to be faithful
to each other “for better, for worse, for richer, for
poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us
part.” So, when a couple faces the “worse,”
“poorer,” or “sickness,” or the brink of destruction,
recall the moral lesson of our activity, OBEY the
manufacturer’s manual. Ask for help from the
Church’s ministries on marriage and family.
