What is an Adjective?
An adjective is a word that modifies a noun and adds something to
its meaning.

 The word modify means “ change ”.

Examples:

an intelligent student,

a lazy student

a good student

Other Adjectives are:

young, old, rich, poor, beautiful, modern etc

a. Attributive Case (Direct Case):
In this case adjectives are used before nouns.
Example:
Fawad is a great student.
RANA is the best place to seek English..
Mansour is an excellent administrator.

b.Predicative Case (Indirect Case):
In this case adjectives are used after linking
verbs.
Example:
The rose smells nice.
The student is lazy.
Ahmad is intelligent.

Adjective may be divided into the following
kinds:

1. Adjective of Quality /Descriptive


2. Adjective of Quantity
3. Adjective of Number
4. Demonstrative Adjective
5. Numeral Adjective
6. Proper Adjective
7. Interrogative Adjective

1.Adjective of Quality
Adjective of Quality shows the kind or quality of a person or thing.

Examples:

Muhammad (s) was an honest personality.

Kabul is a large city.

He is a honest man.

The foolish crow tried to sing.

2. Adjective of Quantity
 Adjective of Quantity shows how much of a thing is meant.

They are ( all , a little , any , much , half of , whole, enough


, little )
They are used with non-count nouns to show indefinite
quantity. .

Examples:
I ate some rice.

He has little intelligence.

Take great care of your health.

She lost all her wealth.

I have enough sugar.

3.Numeral Adjectives.
 Numeral Adjectives are those Adjectives
which show how many persons or things are
meant.

Numeral adjectives show number.


Numeral adjectives are subdivided into two
main classes.
Numeral Adjective
Definite Indefinite
Numeral Numeral

a. Definite Numeral Adjectives:
Definite Numerals denotes some exact numbers.

b. Indefinite Numeral Adjectives:


 Indefinite Numeral Adjectives show indefinite numbers of persons
or things.
 They are (( all , any , many , few , enough , some )
Examples:
I have some books.
There are enough chairs in the classroom.
He checked many dictionaries.
He saw few friends.

A. Definite Numeral Adjective:

1. Cardinal Number:
They show how many persons or things there
are
( as one , two , three etc) are called Cardinal

2.Ordinal Number
Numbers.

Ordinal Numbers: Ordinal numbers show the


exact position.
Example: First / 1st , Second /2nd , Third /3rd ,
Fourth /4th etc.

4.Demonstrative Adjective
Demonstrative Adjectives point out which person or thing is
meant ; as,

This boy is stronger than Naeem.

That boy is industrious ( hardworking) .

These mangoes are sweet.

Those rascals must be punished.

 Demonstrative: show, indicate, display, exhibit, present

5. Proper Adjectives
* Those adjectives which are taken from

are called Proper adjectives.

6.Interrogative Adjective.
Interrogative adjectives: are those
adjectives which come before nouns and
interrogate or inquire about nouns.
Interrogative adjectives are ( What , Which ,
Whose )
Example:
Which marker do you like?
What color he loves to wear?
Whose car is it?

and say to which class it belongs:
