ENEMA
INTRODUCTION
Enema is a technique in which fluid is introduced to the
lower bowel by way of rectum to flush out the accumulated
waste matter or to stimulate the evacuation.
On the basis of temperature of water-
Neutral (92-98F)
Hot (100-104 F)
Cold (70-80 F).
On the basis of ingredients-
Water enema.
Neem water enema (15-16 leaves in 1 litre water).
Buttermilk enema.
Triphala enema (1 spoon in 1 litre water).
Oil enema.
Honey enema (3 spoons in 1 litre water).
Lemon water enema.
Requisites-
Enema table, enema can, enema catheter, water at required temperature, Vaseline or oil or
glycerin.
Procedure-
Enema can is hanged about 3 feet above from the table. Fill the enema can with water at required
temperature.
The catheter is joined with stop cork. Air bubbles are removed from the catheter.
Patient can be made to lie down in following position-
1. Left lateral position.
2. Supine position with leg flexed.
3. Knee chest position.
4. Right lateral position.
The catheter is lubricated with oil, glycerine and lubricate the anus too.
Insert the cathetor till 2 inches into the anus.
Slowly open the stop cork and water enters into anal canal to the rectum.
Patient should take or should be allowed for slow and deep breathing
throughout the treatment.
Ask the patient to stay relaxed and comfortable.

Ifthe patient feels evacuation, stop the flow of
water and slowly the catheter is removed from
the anus.
Patient is advised for walking.
After 2-5 minutes, ask the patient to empty the
bowel or go for evacuation. Then, relax.
Precautions-
The air bubbles should be removed from the catheter.
Avoid taking enema immediately after taking meal
and before the meal.
During the procedure, ask the patient for deep
breathing.
Proper position of the patient should be
maintained.
The catheter must be sterile.
Use the enema kit that belongs to you.
Slowly insert and remove the catheter.
Indications-
Hot-constipation, dyspepsia, gall stones, flatulence,
headache, diabetes mellitus.
Cold- fever, colitis, typhoid, diarrhea, jaundice.
Neutral- fasting, pre-operative procedure of surgery,
before delivery of baby, nutrient supplementation via
rectum.
Contra- indications-
Hemorrhoids.
Piles.
Hernia.
Ulcers.
Pregnancy.
Menstruation.
Hypertension.
