What is ionization?
Creating ions in a gas assembly.

External agents that bring about the process –Ionizing

Agent.

Migration of ions through gas constitutes an electric

current-Ionization Current.
Ionization Chamber :-
It works on the principle that charged subatomic
particles can ionize a gas.

No.of ion pairs formed gives information about –

nature of incident particle,energy.
Principle :-
The ionization chamber works in the principle of
measurement of the no.of ions and the e- produced
in a gas filled chamber.

Achieved by creating electrical potential across the

chamber-by two electrodes.

e-ns rush towards the anode.

+ve ions towards the cathode.

Migration of ions constitute electric current.

Description of
Instrument:-
1.Ionization Chamber :-
A thin axial wire- enclosed with glass envelope.

High PD across cylinder and wire electrode.

Wire electrode – anode.

Cylinder- cathode.

2.Other components :-

Capacitor, Resistor and Amplifier cum pulse

counter.
Video Reference:-
Working:-

When ionizing radiation enters the chamber, it

interacts with the gas molecules, producing ion
pairs.

 The external voltage source generates an electric

field between the electrodes, which causes the ions
to move towards the electrodes of opposite charge.

The movement of ions generates a current

proportional to the radiation intensity, which can be
measured and used to quantify the radiation dose.
Ionization Region – Characteristic Curve
:-
Characteristics
Study :-
Charge collected by the electrode in ionization
chamber will be less than the charge produced by
the gas-because of recombination of ions.

 Ionization chamber is said to be saturated to

degree that such ionic recombination is absent.

Higher applied voltage result in the gas

multiplication – free electrons gain K.E to produce
secondary ionization.
Applications:-
Nuclear industry.

Smoke Detectors.

Medical Radiation
Measurement.
Advantages:-
Excellent Stability over time.

Ease of implementation.

Excellent linearity accordance to

activity levels.
