In this presentation, we will know about Basics of magnetic levitation train

system, its components and working. Basically, the MAGLEV train stands for
magnetic levitation train and is a system of high speed transportation as
compared to conventional train system.
Working principle

The working principle of maglev train states that

Due to magnetic field generated by respective power source

whether it may be permanent magnets or electromagnets causes
levitation to vehicle or object if the same pole of respective power
source faces to each other and propulsion of vehicle causes due to
attraction or repulsion action of magnetic field generated by
another same power source as their opposite poles faces to each
other.
Construction Of Maglev System
1. It consists of a levitation
electromagnets and guidance
electromagnet.
2. Also consists of compartment and
undercarriage parts.
3. There are three types of systems;
electromagnetic suspension,
electrodynamic suspension, magneto
dynamic suspension.
4. In EMS, electromagnets are used
whereas in EDS system
superconductors are used and in MSD
system permanent magnets are used.
5. The rail track and train body is made
up by steel.
Working

Working can be divided into three parts namely

1. Levitation ~
 when a magnetic material available in track and below the
train body faces to other with like poles generated by
magnetic material causes levitation because of movement of
electrons are spinning in opposite direction to each other.
 Superconducting magnets are used for this system
2. Propulsion ~
 Linear motors like linear induction motors and linear synchronous motors
are used for propulsion
 The propulsion system is depends upon attraction and repel action cause
by Electromagnets in the form of coil.
 Once the train is levitated, power is supplied to the coils within the
guideway walls to create a unique system of magnetic fields that pull and
push the train along the guideway which results in movement of train
3. Guidance ~
 When the vehicle is in the straight ahead position, no current flows, but
any moves off-line create flux that generates a field that naturally pushes
or pulls it back into line.

play a crucial role in Superconducting magnets
maglev systems. They are offer several advantages,
made from special including high magnetic
materials that exhibit zero field strength, low energy
electrical resistance when consumption, and stable

High Initial Investment The construction of maglev tracks and
infrastructure requires significant upfront costs,
which may be a barrier for some projects.

Technical Complexity Maglev technology involves complex engineering

and requires specialized expertise for design,
construction, and maintenance.

Land Acquisition and Environmental Permits Building maglev lines often involves acquiring land

Global Maglev Train
Projects

S h a n g h a i M a g l e v Trai n C e n t ra l Japan Railway's C h u o S h i n k a n s e n

The Shanghai Maglev Train is the world's first Central Japan Railway is developing a high-speed
commercially operational high-speed maglev line, maglev line, known as the Chuo Shinkansen, which
connecting the city's Pudong International Airport aims to connect Tokyo to Nagoya in under 4 0 minutes.
to the city center.
Indian maglev project

Maglev trains can be introduced in India. In February

2020, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) wrote
to the Maharashtra state government and the Indian
Railway Board seeking an in-principle approval for the
project as a public private partnership. The plan is for a
55 km (34 mi) elevated line connecting Chhatrapati
Shivaji Terminus (CSTM) and Panvel with a branch line
to Navi Mumbai International Airport. Maglev systems
would emerge in the next decade, particularly as India
continues to invest in its rail infrastructure and seeks to
enhance high-speed travel options.
Maglev train infrastructure
requirements:
Guideway Construction
The guideway is a crucial component of maglev infrastructure. It consists of
a precisely aligned track that supports the train. The guideway is typically
elevated and supported by pillars to minimize ground disturbances.
Power Supply
Maglev trains require a dedicated power supply system to provide electricity
for propulsion and levitation. The power supply is often located along the
guideway and connected to the train through a third rail or an overhead
catenary system.
Control and Communication System:
An advanced control and communication system is necessary for regulating train
speed, maintaining safe distances between trains, and managing the overall
operation. This system involves sophisticated sensors and algorithms.

Station Facilities:
Maglev train stations require specialized facilities, including platforms for
passenger boarding and disembarking, as well as ticketing systems, security
checkpoints, and other amenities.
