INTRODUCTION
The domesticated red jungle fowl is
believed to be the progenitor of
Philippine native chickens (Lambio,
2010). Some said it resulted from
indiscriminate mating with the exotic
breeds. At present, there are known
genetic groups of native chicken in
the Philippines which were identified
through their phenotype.
These are ‘Banaba’
from Batangas,
‘Bolinao from
Pangasinan,
‘Camarines’ from Bicol
Region, ‘Darag’ from
Panay, ‘Paraoakan’
from Palawan, ‘Cebu
Black’ from Cebu, and
‘Joloano’ from Basilan
INTRODUCTION

Three genetic groups of native chicken improved,conserved


and utilized by BAI-NSPRDC namely Banaba,Paraoakan and
Joloano used as foundation stocks fordifferent projects and
program.
Characteristics of Native Chicken

BANABA

Yellow-red plumage
Black wing and tail feathers
Single comb and red earlobes
Shank are slate in colored
Ave. Body Weight at 16 weeks
M -1.0-1.4 kg
F – 800-1.1 kg
Mature weight:
M - 1.7- 2.0 kg
F - 1.5- 1.8 kg

PARAOAKAN

Black in color
Tail is black with some white
feathers at the base
Long-legged, stand upright, with
yellow to gray shank
Pea comb with bright earlobes
Ave. Body Weight at 16 weeks
M - 1.0 to 1.5 kg
F – 900 to 1.2 kg
Mature weight: M - 2.0 – 2.5 kg F
- 1.8-2.0 kg

Prospect and Potentials of Native Chicken

A. Food and additional livelihood to appxt. 2.5 million


• Selling live chicken with higher price P 150 -200 per head appxt. 900 to
1.2 kg
• Trading or selling to consumer P 250 to 300 per head
• Good source of quality protein (meat and egg) : Low fat – 3.66% vs.
7.53 (Casiple, 2012) ; protein 26.30% vs. 22.00% (Casiple, 2012)
• Unique taste and flavor :free amino acids, like aspartic acid at glutamic
acid.
• Selling dressed native chicken/processing
• Selling of improved day old chicks (DOC)
• Selling Breeder stocks Pure lines/commercial

B. Adapted to local condition

inputs/foragers

Feeding Practices
• For Chicks
– chicken booster feeds ( 0-14 days old)
– Chicken starter feeds (14-45 days old)

• For Growers
– At 5 weeks chicken concentrate feeds with
ordinary/local feeds and grasses, legumes
– Provide ranges planted with grasses or practice
rotational grazing
Feeding Practices

• For Layers
– Palay 25%, corn/cassava 25%, laying
mash 25% and 25% other local feed
resources (azolla, vegetables/grasses,
legumes, snail
– Provide range with grasses to have
access to other nutrients
