Types of Wind Turbines
There are two main types of wind
turbines: horizontal-axis wind
turbines (HAWTs) and vertical-axis
wind turbines (VAWTs).
Jens Martensson
• HAWTs are the most common type
of wind turbine. They have a
horizontal rotor shaft and blades
that spin like an airplane propeller.
• VAWTs have a vertical rotor shaft
and blades that rotate around a
vertical axis. They are less common
but have advantages in certain
situations, such as urban areas with 1
turbulent winds.
Efficiency of Wind Turbines
The efficiency of a wind turbine is
measured by its capacity factor,
which is the ratio of the actual energy
output to the maximum possible
energy output. Modern wind turbines
Jens Martensson
have capacity factors of around 40-
50%, meaning they produce
electricity

• Wind farms harness the power of
wind to generate electricity through
the use of turbines.
• Turbines are tall structures with
large blades that rotate when wind
blows against them. 2
• As the blades spin, they turn a
Reducing Greenhouse Gas
Emissions
Wind energy is a clean and renewable
source of electricity, which means it
does not produce greenhouse gas
emissions like fossil fuel-based power
plants. By harnessing the power of
wind, we can significantly reduce our

reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate
the harmful effects of climate change.
Advantages of Wind Energy
• Wind energy is a renewable energy
source, meaning it is sustainable
and will not run out.
• The wind energy industry creates
jobs in manufacturing, installation,
operation, and maintenance of wind
turbines. 3
