BIOLOGY INVESTIGATORY

PROJECT

• Study of rates of pollen

germination in various
species in sugar and boron
solution
INDEX:-

Introduction:-
• Pollen grains are microspores
(male spores), which produce
male gametophyte on
germination. Pollen grains
germinate on reaching the
stigma. The process of transfer
pollen grains for anther to the
stigma is called pollination. A
pollen grain has two cells-
generative cell and vegetative
cell (tube cell) at the time of
pollination. Aim

• . During pollen
germination, a pollen tube
grows out from the pollen
grain through a germ pore
present in the exine. The
tube cell grows out in the
form of pollen tube. The
generative cell move down
to the pollen tube and
divide into male gametes.
• The tube cell grows out in the
form of pollen tube. The
generative cell move down to
the pollen tube and divide into
male gametes. The pollen tube
enters the microphyle of ovule
and releases the male gametes
in the ovule to ensure
fertilisation The rate of pollen
germination differs in different
plant species, which is quite
interesting subject. Therefore,
the study of rate of pollen
germination of different plant
species has been taken for the
present project.
Aim:-

• To study rates of pollen

germination of various
species in sugar and boron
solution
Materials required

• Flowers of different plants

• Cavity slides
• Sucrose
• Boric acid
• Distilled water
• Beaker
• Microscopes
EXPERIMENT PROCEDURE

• Prepare an nutrient solution by

dissolving 1 gram of sucrose in
100ml of distilled water. Take five
clean cavity slides and put few
drops of nutrient solution in the
cavity of each slide. Dust the pollen
grains on the nutrient solution from
different flowers on separate slides .
Similarly prepare another nutrient
medium by dissolving 1gram of
boric acid in 100ml of distilled water
and repeat the experiment with the
pollen grains of flowers of different
plants. Record your observations in
the table.
• . Similarly prepare another
nutrient medium by
dissolving 1gram of boric
acid in 100ml of distilled
water and repeat the
experiment with the pollen
grains of flowers of
different plants. Record
your observations in the
table

PRECAUTIONS

• The germinated pollen seeds

should be carefully counted
• The slides should not be
disturbed or else the position of
the pollen will change
