many factors that contribute to
CAUSES OF DEFORESTATION
FUEL Half of all the trees that are cut down
are used for fuel as burning wood is common in developing countries.
WOOD AND PAPER PRODUCTS Huge factor
for driving deforestation around the world .
CATTLE RANCHING Cutting down trees to

FARMING Large areas of rainforest are cleared for
farmland and the soil becomes devoid of its nutrients.
MINING ND INFRASTRUCTURE Rare minerals like
gold and iron ore are discovered in areas of rainforest.
POPULATION INCREASE With increase in

population, the amount of land needed for humans to live also increases and thus deforestation is practiced.
IMPLICATIONS OF DEFORESTATION
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS Increase in global warming conditions and CO2
emissions.
Alterations in climate. A large amount of forest area disappears from the
earth.
Ozone depletion. loss of valuable trees and medicinal plants. Erosion of soil.

ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS It robs a country of potential renewable
resources.
Diminishes potential revenue for tropical
countries in the long term.
Ecotourism suffers due to deforestation Destroys potential forest products Decrease in the exports of primary forest

products
BIO-DIVERSITY IMPLICATIONS Disturbs animals habitat and forces them to
enter habitats which are already occupied.
Territorial conflicts and homelessness. Poses the problem of lack of food availability Migration disturbances. Disappearance or extinction of species.

SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS It hardly hits the living conditions of the
people who consider forests as their primary habitats
It also affects the availability of the basic
resources such as food, shelter, materials for cooking, clothing, etc.
Their environment i.e. the forests becomes
polluted as a result of mining and oil extraction.

OVERVIEW OF WORLDWIDE DEFORESTATION
Brazil has the highest rate of deforestation
(90-95 %)
Central America has lost 50% of its rainforest South America lost 70% of its rainforest Philippines has lost 90% of its rainforest Madagascar has lost 95% of its rainforest

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
reduce wasteful land use practices improve already developed lands businesses and corporations should take little
initiatives to help reduce deforestation this serious issue
governments have to make citizens aware of plant more trees to maintain the ecosystem groups can be formed to decrease
deforestation
5/5/12
WHAT CAN WE AS STUDENTS DO ?
recycle paper purchase only the most ecologically sensitive
products
use wood sparingly plant more trees say no to deforestation
5/5/12
WHAT CAN THE GOVERNMENT DO ?
Forest protection schemes Educate the public regarding the importance
of
forests and trees
Encourage reforestation Take strict actions against deforestation
5/5/12
If we do not put an end to deforestation, all of earths forests will disappear within the next 100 years.
PLANT A TREE AND BREATHE OXYGEN FOR FREE !!!!
