MAINTENANCE

 Any action or step performed to keep a


machinery, equipment, or material in a
serviceable condition, and/or to prevent
breakdown or failure
TYPES OF MAINTENANCE

Preventive Maintenance
 Is a pre-determined work performed to a schedule with
the aim of preventing the wear and tear or sudden failure
of equipment

Corrective Maintenance
 Is a type of maintenance intended to restore equipment to
a state in which it can perform its required function.
MAINTENANCE TERMS
Planned Maintenance System (PMS)
 A system of tools and procedures utilized by M&R
personnel who conduct, supervise, and analyze different
levels of maintenance activities in order to determine,
describe, schedule, assess, and control maintenance
activities effectively.

PMS Work Plan


 A list of PM activities with corresponding frequencies and
requirements developed by a vessel’s department
MAINTENANCE TERMS
Current Ship’s Maintenance Project (CSMP)
 Contains all information regarding the maintenance
history of a ship. It is being maintained by the ship and
contains all corrective, preventive, and deferred actions.

Continuous Maintenance Availability (CMAV)


 Intended for the accomplishment of inspections,
condition-based upkeep, and minor repairs. It is a
maintenance availability that normally lasts for two to six
weeks. It is usually scheduled when the ship is in port.
MAINTENANCE TERMS
PN Systems Engineering Management Information System
(PNSEMIS)
 A database for Naval Systems Engineering which provides
readily available data for reference in any repair and
maintenance related activities.

Repair Request
 A document used by the vessel to request a certain
machinery or equipment for repair approved by a
competent authority.
LEVELS OF MAINTENANCE

Organization Level Maintenance (OLM)


 Maintenance performed within the vessel by the ship’s
force without assistance from external personnel or
agency.
Intermediate Level Maintenance (ILM)
 Is an activity undertaken to prevent or repair damages and
performed by a shore-based maintenance & repair facility.
It includes planned, preventive, and corrective
maintenance, as well as installation of minor alterations
that are beyond the organizational level but does not
require the use of more extensive shop facilities and
equipment found at shipyards.
LEVELS OF MAINTENANCE

Depot Level Maintenance (DLM)


 A maintenance echelon which requires skills and facilities
beyond the capability of organizational and intermediate
level maintenance. The repair activities are performed by
Naval Shipyard, private shipyards, or other shore-based
maintenance and repair facilities that cater to dry-docking,
alterations, and modifications that upgrade and improve
the ship’s systems and capabilities.

 Has overall responsibility for ensuring maintenance is
accomplished
Executive Officer
 Responsible to the CO for the overall management of the
maintenance program
Department Head
 Responsible to the XO for the effective operation and
execution of maintenance within the department
Department POIC
 Responsible to the department head for proper operation of
the maintenance program in their department
ORGANIZATION &
RESPONSBILITIES
Division Officer
 Responsible to the department head for proper execution
of the maintenance program in their department
Division POIC (Work Center Supervisor)
 Responsible to the division officer for the effective
operation of the maintenance program within their work
center
Maintenance Personnel
 Performs assigned maintenance requirements
