The Impact of Sleep Deprivation

towards the Academic Performance

of Grade 12 Students

Researchers:
Capagngan, Eurika
Dotdot, Norme M.
Rayon, Sheikainah
Veloso, Ma. Cassandra A.
CHAPTER 1 : Introduction
• Sleep is a natural process that helps maintain health and balance (Xie, Tang, et. al
2019).
• Adults require eight hours of sleep per night for optimal performance (Okano et. al,
2019).
• Sleep deprivation can lead to health issues such as impaired thinking, emotional
regulation, and work performance (Pathak N., 2021).
• Lack of sleep can hinder clear thinking and emotional regulation (Dowell and Clayton,
(2018).
• Sleep deprivation can affect learning, memory, and decision-making abilities (Lee et al.,
2015).
Statement of the Problem
• This study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the causes of lack of sleep?

2. What are the effects of lack of sleep towards the academic

performance?
3. What is the relationship between sleep deprivation and academic

performance of students?
Conceptual Framework

Independent Variable Dependent Variable

Lack of Sleep Academic

Performance

• The figure above shows the relationship between the independent variable
lack of sleep and the dependent variable difficulty in concentrating.
Purpose of the study
• Investigates the effects of sleep deprivation on academic performance,
cognitive function, and concentration among grade 12 students at
Talisayan National High School.

• The hypothesis suggests a significant relationship between sleep deprivation

and difficulty concentrating.

• Aims to understand the deeper effects of sleep deprivation on students'

thinking and learning.

• Provides valuable information about the negative effects of sleep deprivation

and offers solutions to enhance academic performance.
Significance of the Study
• This study aims to provide valuable information about the effects of sleep
deprivation on students’ academic performance, concentration, and overall
cognitive functions.

Beneficiaries of the study:

• Students • Policymakers and Public Health Officials

• Teachers and Parents

• Future Researchers
• School Institutions
Scope and Delimitation
• Investigates the link between sleep deprivation and academic performance.

• Identifies challenges students face in maintaining healthy sleep routines.

• Uses surveys to gather data from Grade 12 HUMSS students.

• Limited to students enrolled in the academic track HUMSS of Talisayan National

High School-Talisayan Senior High School.

• May not cover all factors affecting sleep, including medical conditions and
socioeconomic circumstances.
CHAPTER II Review of Related Literature

• Previous research has shown a link between poor academic performance

in children and adults and the amount of sleep that people report as delayed
or inappropriate sleep, waking up too late, especially on weekends, and
daytime sleepiness (Jalali R., Khazaei H., et al, 2020).

• Another study by Maheshwari G., Shaukat F. (2018), Poor sleep quality

negatively impacts academic performance in Pakistani medical students
and,
• Ghana's medical students (Lawson H. J., Wellens-Mensah J. T. et. al, 2019)
CHAPTER II Review of Related Literature

• Sleep and academic performance are generally related, with longer,

higher-quality sleep associated with improved academic
performance.
• According to Alotaibe A., Alosaimi F., et al. (2020), the body, mind,
memory, and learning all depend on sleep. Nontheless, there is a lack
of discussion on the connection between stress, academic
performance, and the quality of one's sleep.

• Long-term use of the internet for leisure was strongly correlated with
less sleep, but there was no conclusive evidence of this relationship with
internet use for research (Kim S. Y., Kim M., 2018).
