Treasures of the past
CARROM
● Carrom is a indoor tabletop game. Carrom is known by many names around the world
including carrum, couronne, carum, karam, karom, karum, fatta (Punjabi) and finger
billiards.
● The carrom was originated in the 18th century, invented by the Indian maharajas. For
many generations, the carrom board game has been played.
● After the First World War, the game of carrom board gained more popularity. It is an ideal
game to play at home because it has definite size and a simple design.
● When the striker hits a coin, it bounces off at an angle equal to the angle of incidence.
CARROM
● This allows the brain to function smartly and promotes foresight.
● The game is usually played on a square board made of plywood, with a pocket in
each corner.
● The word carrom means to strike and rebound .
SCRABBLE
● Alfred Mosher Butts was an American architect, famous for inventing the board game Scrabble
in 1938. Poughkeepsie, New York, U.S.
● It was called LEXIKO in 1931, then was called CRISS CROSS WORDS.
● Butts sought to combine the vocabulary of word games with the elements of chance.
● Point value is as follows: 1 point - A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T, R. 2 points - D, G. 3 points - B, C,
M, P.
SCRABBLE
● The player who has the tile nearest the beginning of the alphabet with the blank preceding A
goes first. The exposed tiles are put back into the bag and the bag is shaken to shuffle them.
Each player, in turn, then draws seven new tiles and places them on their racks. Everyone is now
ready to play SCRABBLE.
● The word must use at least 2 tiles, and 1 of them must be placed on the star square in the center
of the board. The word can be laid from top to bottom or from left to right, but it can't go
diagonally across the Scrabble board.
MONOPOLY
● The history of Monopoly can be traced back to 1903, when American anti-monopolist Lizzie Magie
created a game called The Landlord's Game.
● The Monopoly game as we know it today was designed by Charles Darrow.
● Monopoly is called “Monopoly” because one of the game objectives is to collect monopolies that is,
exclusive possession or control of sets of real estate.
● Rich Uncle Pennybags is now known more commonly almost exclusively as the Monopoly Man,
Mr. Moneybags, or Mr. Monopoly.
MONOPOLY
● Those original tokens—car, iron, lantern, thimble, shoe, tophat, and rocking horse—were joined
by the battleship and cannon soon after.
● Shortages of raw materials during the war years failed to disrupt "Monopoly" production, but
components, including playing pieces, were replaced with lower quality alternatives. The
originals being a cannon, thimble, top hat, iron, battleship and boot.
● Each player is given $1500 in cash divided as follows: two each of $500's, $100's, and $50's; six
$20's; five each of $10's, $5's, and $1's. All remaining cash and other equipment go to the Bank.
Stack the Bank's cash on edge in the compartments in the plastic.
