• Lesson 1.2: Definition of Photography, Police Photography and Forensic
Photography

Lesson Summary
This lesson will define the difference between police photography and
forensic photography and the definition of photography as part of law
enforcement.

• Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:

1. Know and understand the significance of photography in law enforcement; and;


2. Differentiate police photography and forensic photography

• A. PHOTOGRAPHY

• Photography - "Phos" or "Photos" ( Greek word) "light."


"Grapho" means "Writing" or "Graphia," meaning "to
Draw.“

• Sir John Frederick William Herschel - coined the word


photography when he first wrote a letter to Henry Fox Talbot.
MODERN DEFINITION
• It is an art or science which deals with the reproduction of images
through the actions of light, upon synthesized materials (film or
photo paper), with the aid of a camera and its accessories, and the
chemical processes involve therein.

TECHNICAL AND LEGAL DEFINITION


• Modern photography may be defined as the chemical, thermal,
electronic recording of the images of the scenes or objects formed
by some radiant energy, including gamma rays, x-rays, ultraviolet
rays, visible light and infra-red rays.
B. POLICE PHOTOGRAPHY

• It is applying the principles of photography related to


police work and the administration of justice.

• It is art or science that deals with studying photography


principles, the preparation of photographic evidence and
application to police work.

C. FORENSIC PHOTOGRAPHY

• The forensic - Latin word "Forum" means "a


marketplace" where people gathered for public discussion.

• FORENSIC PHOTOGRAPHY- the process of


photographing or recording the crime scene or any object
for court presentation.
• The art or science of photography documenting a crime
scene and evidence for laboratory examinations and analysis
for purposes of the court trial

PHOTOGRAPH

• - It is the mechanical and chemical result of photography.

• The picture is a generic term is referred to all kinds of the


formed image.

• The photograph is an image that can only be a product of


photography.
What is the main significance of photography in
police work?

•- The photograph of the crime scene is a factual


RECORD of an incident
- By photographing the crime, the place, time and
event can be CAPTURED in a single photograph or a series
of shots.

In short, a photograph of the crime scene can catch


and preserve the time, space, and event.
-A photograph can preserve the "SPACE."
The place of commission, Aka "locus criminis" in Latin and
where specifically did the incident happen

What was the crime committed
Picture - Latin word "pictura" or "pictus," which means "to paint." It is
a designed or representation made by various means such as painting,
drawing, or photography

Negative - A material showed a negative (latent) photographic image on


transparent material used for printing positive pictures (photograph) as a
result of chemical processing.

Camera Obscura- Obscura means dark or darkened chamber room, is


an optical device that projects an image of its surroundings on a screen.
The camera obscura was considered as the first camera. An artist would
enter a completely dark room and drill a small hole into the wall.

The three figures shows on how to make or the process on making a camera
obscura and it shows also on how to use the camera obscura.

• Search a video showing how to make a camera obscura,


then make your camera obscura or have a video of yourself
self-showing that you are making a camera obscura.
