Characteristic of Quantitaive Data
Describing a research problem through a description of trends or a
need for an explanation of the relationship among variables.
Providing a major role for the literature through suggesting the research
questions to be asked and justifying the research problem and creating a
need for the direction (purpose statement and research questions or
hypotheses) of the study.
Creating purpose statements, research questions, and
hypotheses that are specific, narrow, measurable, and
observable.
Characteristic of Quantitaive Data
Collecting numeric data from a large number of people using instruments
with preset questions and responses.
Analyzing trends, comparing groups, or relating variables
using statistical analysis, and interpreting results by
comparing them with prior predictions and past research.
Writing the research report using standard, fi xed structures
and evaluation criteria, and taking an objective, unbiased
approach.

Definition and example
Achievement tests
01 Definition :
A test where the individual's grade is a measure of how well he or she did in comparison with a
large group of test-takers (Vogt, 2005).
Example : lowa Test of Basic Skills
Criterion-referenced tests
Definition:
02
A test where the individual's grade is a measure of how well he or she did in comparison to a
criterion or score.
Example: General Educational Development or GED Test
Intelligent tests
03 Definition:
A test that measures an individual's intellectual ability.
Example: Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children

Aptitude tests
04 Definition :
A test to measure a person's ability to estimate how they will perform at some time in the future or
in a different situation.
Example: Cognitive ability; Binet-Simon Scale to identify a child's mental level
Interest inventory
05 Definition :
A test that provides information about an individual's interests and helps them make career choices.
Example : Strong Interest Inventory
Personality assessment
06 Definition:
A test that helps a person identify and measure human character istics that help predict or explain
behavior over time and across situations (Thorndike, 1997).
Example: Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory
