What is DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY?
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
• Digital photography is the practice of taking
photographs using a digital camera or a camera on
a digital device (think smartphone or tablet). It
works differently to film photography – which
relies upon light, chemical reactions, and time in a
dark room to produce the image.
• Instead, a digital camera produces images using
an electronic sensor inside the camera that
captures the light that enters through the lens.
The camera’s processor then converts it into a
digital file and images captured are stored on the
camera’s memory card.
Digital Image
• These are created by non-photographic
equipment such as computer, tomography,
scanners, and radio telescopes

• It can be made by scanning conventional

photographic images
Brief history of Digital Camera
The world’s first digital camera was
developed in 1975 by Eastman Kodak
engineer Steven Sasson in Rochester, New
York. It didn’t resemble the DSLR camera
systems we are used to, weighed almost 4
kilograms, and was roughly the size of a
toaster. While it could only capture black-
and-white images onto a digital cassette
tape, it revolutionized digital photography
with several new technologies.
To build this prototype, Steve Sasson used a
movie camera lens, Motorola parts, 16
batteries, and charge-coupled device (CCD)
sensors originally developed by Fairchild
Semiconductor, RCA, and Texas Instruments
How does a Digital Camera works?

Camera's digital sensor captures the picture by turning

light into electrical signals, which are stored as tiny dots or
bits of data. In the camera, these data bits form a bitmap,
with rows and columns of dots. All the tiny dots combine to
create the whole image. Digital sensors come in many
different sizes, so these bitmaps can vary greatly in size.

High MP camera produces beautiful pictures, the MP

number has more to do with file size than it does with
picture quality. The MP number determines the maximum
size image that can be produced from the file. This is
different from resolution, or the density of the dots.
Resolution determines how sharp and clear the image is.
Types of DIGITAL CAMERA
1. CAMERA PHONES
- Cameras built right into the phone.
- It has zoom ability
- Some even come with a flash or light source
- They are usually shipped with software and cables that
enable you to download
- Your photographs onto your computer

2. Compact Cameras
- Far more popular
- It has an LCD screen to compose and review your
photographs which enables you to compose your picture
using both eyes.
- Navigation buttons next to the screen allow you to bring up
any picture you have taken, zoom in to ensure
it is in focus, erase it or review tiny thumbnails or each of
your images.
- Modes can be set up

3. Digital SLRs
- It behaves like their film-based counterparts with the same
body but with different electronics on the inside
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE
ADVANTAGES

1. Digital cameras offer you more control over

your exposure. Not only can you change shutter
speed and aperture, now a digital camera lets
you instantly control ISO, white balance and
more.
2. A memory card, depending on size, can hold
thousands of images and is reusable.
3. You can view your images before printing.
DISADVANTAGES
1. Quality concerns: Some photographers argue that film
photography produces a more organic and authentic look
compared to digital photos, which can sometimes appear
too "perfect" or overly processed
2. He overall costs can be higher. High-end digital cameras
can be incredibly expensive. If you want to edit your
images, you’ll also need a computer. Then add in the cost
of memory cards, batteries and printing images
3. Battery Consumption– Battery consumption depletes more
quickly in digital cameras. This makes it necessary to keep
a few extra batteries in hand, especially during extensive
photo sessions.
