WRITING CONCLUSIONS

 Atthe end of any type of essay, you need to write a


short conclusion.
 Purpose of the conclusion is to show the writer’s
main aim of the essay and reviewing the relevant
issues that were discussed in the body of the essay
for the reader.
 Never write a new thing in the conclusion
Structure of the conclusion:

1. A return to the thesis statement

2. Summary of relevant points

3. Learning statement
1. A RETURN TO THE THESIS STATEMENT

Strong conclusions will usually start by restating the general idea of the essay.
 2. summary of the relevant points.

A good way to summarize the relevant points is to provide 1 or 2 strong


sentences that include the details of each of the preceding body paragraphs
 3. Learning statement

Here the writer offers the reader some of the insights that s\he has learned, or hopes.
There is no exact formula for it but it usually reflects one of the following categories:
 Hope for the future
 Suggestion for change
 Suggestion for future research
For example:
All things considered, starting life in a foreign country is never easy. One
need to weigh up the pros of the better lifestyle, weather and so on and the
cons of culture shock and language barrier. Personally, I believe in terms of
personal growth eventually outweigh any negatives.
Cohesive devices for conclusion:
 All in all
 To sum up
 In conclusion
 To conclude
 Taking everything into account
 According to the above analysis
 As shown before
 As outlined above
 In the light of these facts, one can conclude that….
 Based on the above-mentioned facts one can summarize that…
 To draw a conclusion the…
 From what has been discussed above one can reach a conclusion that …
 According to the facts outlined above…
 Overall
 In final analysis
 On the whole
These are used to express balanced considerations:
 On balance, it would seem that…
 All in all, there is no absolute answer to the question of…
 In the light of this evidence, it is obvious that…

These are used to express opinion directly


 All in all, I (do not) agree with…
 In conclusion it my belief\opinion that…
 All things considered I firmly believe\feel\think\am convinced that…
