BAKING TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
BAKING UTENSILS / TOOLS
• Measuring cups – There is a standard set for measuring cups , so that all cups
will contain the same quantity or amount . According to the standard , one
cup is equal to one-fourth of a liquid quart or 236.6 cubic centimeters . Use
to measure solids , and dry ingredients , such as flour fat and sugar .
Types of measuring cups
• 1. A graduated cup with fractions marked on each side , it is made of
transparent glass or plastic . It is the most accurate measure for liquids . Choose a
cup with a rim above the one-cup line to avoid spilling , then measure at eye level .
•2 . A series of four individual cups for the fractional parts (usually 1 , ½ , 1/3 , ¼
cup)
• Measuring spoons – a set of individual measuring spoons , these are used to
measure small amount of ingredients needed in the recipe like one tablespoon
of butter , one teaspoon of salt .
• Mixing bowl - used to hold liquids and dry ingredients while they are being
mixed .
• Mixing spoons –wooden spoons are preferred for mixing and these are
used for creaming , mixing ingredients .
• Spatula – used to level off ingredients when measuring and to spread frosting
and icings .
• Sifter- also called a sieve , used to sift flour sugar and any other dry
ingredients
• Rolling Pin- used to roll doughs , biscuits and yeast breads .
• Baking Pans - The rate of browning desired influences the kind of pan
to use . These are used for baking cakes ,biscuits and cookies .
• Pastry Cloth- A canvass pastry cloth or a coarse linen towel used tohandle
flour for rolling out dough and for kneading
• Scraper- A rubber or pliable plastic scraper is useful in many ways . It is used
to remove all sticky ingredients from the container . Also to get the best drip of
butter or icings .
• Cutting or Chopping board- Used to protect the table from slicing or cutting .
• Weighing Scale – Used for weighing doughs, and other ingredients.
• Biscuit Cutter – Used for cutting biscuits and doughs .
• Pastry Blender – Used to cut in shortenings in such breads as biscuits and
scones .
• Pastry Brush - Used for brushing melted shortenings , milk , eggs and for
greasing baking pans .
• Pastry Wheels – Used to cut strips of dough .
• Cooling Racks – A rack used in resting , cooling baked products without
steaming .
• Muffin Pans – Used for baking cup cakes , muffins and puffs .
• Wire Whip – Used for mixing , whipping cream ,and egg whites .
• Oven Thermometer – Used to get the accurate heat or temperature in baking.
• Cake turner - Used for turning cakes.
• Cheese Grater – Used for grating / cutting cheese , and other fruits and
vegetables.

• Jelly roll pan – Sponge cake bake in this shallow pan , about 10- 15 inches
thick.
• Individual custard cup - Used for baking cup cakes , custards and the like.
• Bread loaf pan – Used for baking loaf bread , fruit cakes etc.
• Round layer pan - Used for baking round cakes
• Pie pan - A container used for baking pies
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT
• Electric mixer - Most useful in mixing icings . meringues , sauces , eggs ,
creaming sugar and butter , and salad dressings.
• Oven Toaster – Used for toasting breads , nuts , seeds , sometimes used in
baking small amount of cookies , a simple of a normal oven .
• Gas / Electric Range - Very important equipment in cooking and inbaking.
Cooking processes become easier because of this equipment. It has automatic
ignition, timer and temperature.
• Microwave Oven - The time stated in the cooking recipe should be followed
exactly . The microwave shut off automatically . Frozen food can be cooked or
heated quickly in this equipment.
• Blender – Used to combine , mix , puree , blend , liquefy all kinds of food . It is
very useful equipment in food preparation.
