THE COST OF

DISCIPLESHIP
Luke 9:57-62
57And it came to pass, that, as they
went in the way, a certain man said
unto him, Lord, I will follow thee
whithersoever thou goest. 58And
Jesus said unto him, Foxes have
holes, and birds of the air have nests;
but the Son of man hath not where to
lay his head.
59And he said unto
another, Follow me. But he said,
Lord, suffer me first to go and
bury my father. 60Jesus said
unto him, Let the dead bury
their dead: but go thou and
preach the kingdom of God.
61And another also said, Lord, I
will follow thee; but let me first go
bid them farewell, which are at
home at my house. 62And Jesus
said unto him, No man, having put
his hand to the plough, and looking
back, is fit for the kingdom of
God.

I. Following our Lord requires conviction to
commit to serve in spite of Inconvenience.
A. “Lord, I will follow you...” must be a
statement of commitment with conviction.
Not just for Convenience!
B. “Son of man has no where to lay his head" -
meaning he has no comfortable dwelling.
He must be willing toserve in spite of
discomfort.
II. Following our Lord,
we need to remove all
alibis and willingly
pursue service at any
cost.
II. Following our Lord we need to remove all alibis
and willingly pursue service at any cost.
A. The Lord invites another person... “Follow
Me!”
If in our case what will be our response?
An invitation to be with Him
An invitation to be enjoying Him
An invitation to be like Him
II. Following our Lord we need to remove all alibis
and willingly pursue service at any cost.
A. The Lord invites another person... “Follow
Me!”
1. The person here responded with an
alibi... “let me first bury”
“nu madi na kayat adu pambar...
ngem nu kayat na adu pamuspusan”
Never prioritise others more than our Lord
- “let me first...!”
II. Following our Lord we need to remove all alibis
and willingly pursue service at any cost.
A. The Lord invites another person...
“Follow Me!”
2. His alibi seems reasonable...
“...bury my father..."
a. His father is probably sick and is ready to die
b. He might be receiving a large inheritance...
c. He might have been the eldest or only one that
would represent his father as legal representative.
II. Following our Lord we need to remove all alibis
and willingly pursue service at any cost.
B. The Lord Reasons out to his alibi...
“let the dead bury their dead.”
1. Never allow any distractions - “
2. Neatly arrange your life for service –
“preach the Kingdom...”
3. Nicely avail of the opportunity God offers - it is the best!
“A disciple must make a radical commitment.”
III. Following our
Lord Renders a
logical reasoning.
III. Following our Lord Renders a
logical reasoning.
A. “Let me first...”a repeated phrase that shows priorities...
• This should not be our priority; we are to be preaching the
Kingdom...
B. “Bid them farewell…” Jesus’ concern must be our TOP
priority as well.
• Teach God’s Truth to others;
• Obey Him first;
• Prioritize Souls
III. Following our Lord Renders a
logical reasoning.
C. “No man, having put his hand to the plough,
and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God”
1. Willing Sacrifice
2. Wholehearted Surrender
3. Worthy Service
CONCLUSION
I am reminded of an old song...
I have decided to follow Jesus… no turning
back, no turning back
The world behind me the cross before me...
no turning back, no turning back
Though no one join me still I will follow... no
turning back, no turning back
CONCLUSION
The cost of true discipleship is that he
love to serve the LORD with a conviction
that he will be committed even if it’s not
convenient nor comfortable but will carry
on continuously with courage that in
Christ, he is a conqueror!
