• Observation is an extensive means of assessing
and evaluating students’ behavior and learning. It
can provide valuable data to make valid
judgements and evaluations.
How can you make your observation data
most useful?
• Observe and record as part of your classroom routine.
• Plan for focused observation of specific students.
• Choose a variety of settings for the observations.
• Record your observations as close to the time they are done possible.
• Plan time to share your observations with the students.

Advantages of Observations:
• Observation can help you get know children so that you
can build relationships with them.
• Observation can give you the information you need
about how to teach each child.
• Can enhance your knowledge of child development and
learning.
Disadvantages of Observation:
• Observer bias
• Incomplete picture
• Time consuming
• Ethical concerns
• Interference with natural behavior

B. CHECKLIST
• Checklist, is a selected list of words, phrases
and sentences and paragraphs following
which an observer records a check mark to
denote a presence or absence of whatever is
being observed.
Purpose of checklist:
• Checklist are use for various purposes
• To collect acts for educational surveys
• To record behavior in observational studies
• To use in educational appraisal, studies, property, plan, textbook
• To rate the personality
• To know the interest of the subjects
Make sure your checklists:
• Require a simple yes/no response about
specific aspects
• Focus on only one item or aspect at a time
• Are complete as soon as possible

• It is the process of examining and
reflecting on one’s own performances
and progress in a particular area of study
or activity.
Examples of self-evaluation in education:

• Rating scales are useful for gathering
information about students’ learning. Rating
scales are created according to
predetermined criteria.
Advantages of Rating scale:
• Rating scales are standard device for recording qualitative and
quantitative judgements about observed performance.
• It help teachers to rate their students periodically on various
characteristics such as punctuality, honesty, cheerfulness.
• It can be efficient and economical in the use of a teacher’s time.
• It evaluate personal social development.
Disadvantages of Rating scale:
• There is a lack of uniformity.
• There are several common source of errors in rating scales.
• Errors may be due to:
1. Ambiguity
2. Personal of the rater-halo effect, personal bias, logical error
3. Attitude of the rater
E. PORTFOLIO
• The portfolio may contain a picture of
students’ best work, anecdotal records,
observation sheet of the student,
assessment records and etc.
Advantages of a portfolio:
• Enables faculty to assess a set of complex tasks, including interdisciplinary learning and
capabilities, with examples of types of student work.
• Helps a faculty identity curriculum gaps and a lack of alignment with outcomes.
• Promotes faculty discussions on student learning, curriculum, pedagogy, and student support
services.
• Encourages student reflection on their learning. Students may come to understand what they
have and have not learned.
• Provides students with documentation for job applications or applications to graduate school
Disadvantages of a portfolio:
• Faculty time is required to prepare the portfolio assignment and assist
students as they prepare them.
• Students must retain and compile their own work, usually outside of class.
Motivating the students to take the portfolio seriously may be difficult.
• Transfer students may have difficulties meeting program-portfolio
requirements.
• Storage demands can overwhelm (which is one reason why e-portfolio are
chosen).
E-PORTFOLIOS (ELECTRONIC
PORTFOLIO)
• E-portfolios consist of documents stored
electronically. Electronic portfolios offer rich
possibilities for learning and assessment, with the
added dimension of technology.

descriptive comment made by
the teacher about significant
student behavior.
Its purpose:
• Assist in planning instruction, learning
activities & intervention.
• Keep track of the learning trajectories and
behavioral development of students.
As a future educators, why do
you think Information gathering
techniques plays an important
role in teaching?
For me as a future educator, information gathering techniques not only
help in understanding students’ needs and tailoring teaching methods
accordingly, but also in staying updated with the latest educational
trends and resources. It provide an insights about students’ learning
styles, progress, and areas of difficulty, which can guide your lesson
planning and teaching strategies. It also provide as a compass, that will
guide your approach in teaching and allowing you to adjust based on
the student needs and progress, and drive continuous improvement in
teaching and learning practices. However, it’s also clear that these
techniques come with a responsibility to use the interpret data ethically
and respect students’ privacy. The goal is to use these techniques to
enhance personalized learning an student engagement, while
maintaining a human-centered approach in the classroom.
