When writing the lead in English, use the

active voice.

Example:
Active - The boy threw the ball.
Passive - The ball was thrown by the boy.
Incredible – The ball threw the boy.
Sa Filipino, the lead should start with a
verb.

• Examples:
• PINAYUHAN ni fighting senator Manny Pacquiao ang susunod niyang makakalaban na si Jeff Horn,
na magsikap at ibigay ang 100 porsyento sa kanilang pagtutuos sa Hulyo 2.

• Tinalo nina James Harden at kanyang mga teammate ng Houston Rockets ang 47 big points ni
Russel Westbrook ng Oklahoma City Thunder sa Game 5 sa iskor na 105-99.
Avoid too much embellishment
especially in the lead.

• Prioritize info over entertainment value.

• Focus on telling the story.
Avoid

•Cramming too much

information into the lead.

•You may provide other info

in succeeding paragraphs.
Example

•Tangan ang humahagibis na bilis, pokus at

hindi matatawarang determinasyon, humataw
sa takbuhan si Charles Xavier , Grade 5 Aguinaldo,
na umararo ng dalawang medalyang ginto
sa 100m at 200m dash at isang tanso
sa 400m dash sa district meet sa The Plaza noong Agosto 5 at 6.
DAPAT

sportswriters:
• They start the paragraph with some form of an adjective.
• Example:

EXAMPLE:
•Mabibilis na serbis at malalakas na palo ang ipinamalas ng mga batang manlalaro sa district
volleyball ng X-Men Blue Team kontra X-Men Gold Team sa laban nito na ginanap sa San Jose
Elementary School noong ika-5 at 6 ng Agosto 2016.

•What is the weakness in this lead?

Hindi outright na sinabi kung sinong nanalo or walang sinabing scores.
Dapat:

Hindi na nakahirit pa ang X-Men Gold

Team nang pataubin sila ng X-Men
Blue Team sa loob lamang ng tatlong set,
25-18, 25-16, 25-11, sa district volleyball
na ginanap sa San Jose Elementary School noong ika-5 at 6 ng Agosto 2016.
Do not be afraid to use the word ‘said’

•In straight sports news, it’s awkward

reading words like expressed,
stated, concluded.
Use ‘graphic’ verbs

•Use rush instead of run,

•Use rifled instead of shoot
•Use destroyed, demolished, cripple
instead of rout.
Use accurate quotes
•People don’t usually use “big words” during normal conversations.

•Example:
“Hindi ko akalaing mangunguna ang aming team sa unang bahagi ng sportsfest. Sana magtuloy-
tuloy ang magandang bunga ng aming pagsisikap.”
Use the more appropriate word

Mr. Logan stated his joy over their current team standing.
You do not “state” joy, you “express” it.

Stan Lee was ecstatic to find his pen.

Pen lang ang nahanap esctatic na agad. ‘Di ba pwedeng happy lang or glad?
Be accurate

When it comes to describing the manner how a team won.

Come-from-behind means they trailed before snatching the victory.
Rout means tambak.
Edged means neck and neck (hindi neck to neck) before the other team came out with the win.
There are many ways to say na nanalo ang team. Kung lamang ang team or player pero hindi naman nakakalayo ang
kalaban,
you can say - outclass, prevail, fend off the gritty challenge.
Take a look at the big picture
•What is at stake in the game?
Is it a championship? Is it a semifinal? Do or die? A qualifying game so that the player could
advance to the regionals?
Is the first win in so many years? Is the other team already suffering its 20th straight defeat?
Is that a record?
Is there a historical significance in the game?
Check out the stats
•Stats can be a source of fresh angles
Who is the leading scorer? Who made the game winning shot? Which run instigated the
downfall of the other team?
What punch turned the tide of the fight? Who scored the goal that opened the series of shots
for the team?
Make sure you get the info you need
• Para hindi kayo nagiimbento ng kwento. O kaya naman puno ng mga salitang
'determinasyon, pagsisikap, naglalagablab na spike and mala-ipo ipong 3-pt shot' ang
story.

• Fill the story with info like - Teams, score, site, when the game was played, anong
tournament, key plays, scoring summary, key offensive stats, key defensive stats,
direct quotations, weather and its effect on the game, injuries and condition (updates),
overall record, next games (kung meron)
Examples

• One streak had to end Sunday night and unfortunately for TNT, its five-game run came to a
screeching halt.

•Barangay Ginebra flipped the switch in the second half to score a convincing 107-89 victory over
the KaTropa in the 2017 PBA Commissioner’s Cup in the Big Dome.

•Clamping down on defense, the Gin Kings only allowed TNT to score 28 points in the last two
quarters on their way to a fourth straight win.
EXAMPLE
•Eduard Folayang came up with a superb display of striking prowess to frustrate a highly determined Ev Ting
and retain the ONE lightweight title via unanimous decision Friday night at Mall of Asia Arena.

•“The Landslide” threw every strike in his arsenal in an effort to put down the Malaysian-Kiwi, but Ting proved
to be a formidable opponent who could take shots as well as throw them.

•Folayang, however, proved to be the busier fighter, earning the judges’ nod for a unanimous verdict.
EXAMPLE
• The De La Salle Lady Spikers fired on all cylinders for nearly the entire game to overpower
University of Sto. Tomas in four sets and secure a berth in the finals of the UAAP season 79
Women’s Volleyball Tournament.

• Behind a superb performance from setter Kim Fajardo and their overwhelming net defense, the
Lady Spikers came away with a 25-14, 25-20, 24-26, 25-13 win in their Final 4 showdown against
the Tigresses at Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.
Thank you and good luck!
